Close to binning the 'rocco
I'm close to giving up on my mk2 scorocco gt2....please help!!!!!.
I've had a load of problems with the running and have done the following:
replaced all vaume hoses
replaced wax stat
replaced 3/4 point unit
new air filter, plugs and leads
new distributor
replaced the water plug in the inlet manifold
carb to manifold gasket
The car currently strats when cold, revs up to about k2.5 then drops to arounnd 2k after a few seconds (presume the ttv works).
The car then warms up and the revs drop but it got to point when the revs would move up and down from 1000 to 2500 in regualr cycles. I fiddlled with the timming and got the car constantly reving at around 900-1000. But it was ruff so adjusted the mixture and it died. Now it wont even run. It starts revs up and drops and dies compeltely. I drained the battery so got to get another car to jump start it.
I'm cluching at straws but perhaps rely 61 is faulty causing the 3/4 point unit to move in and out when it shouldn't resulting in the up and down revs thing.
Any suggestions would be greatfully received......

I think you have reached the point where many people would bin the pierburg in favour of the much easier to set up weber

Not sure that is economically viable. The rest of the car is rather battered. Fix it or bin it.

I know how you feel !! I've mothballed mine bought a s3 and having a winter of warmth!!!! Then in spring when show season starts I'll miss it and kick on with this lovely machine! Keep the faith mate you will miss it when it's gone

It's my only half running car. I walk to work but I use it to transport my 2 year old around and my girlfriend uses it for work (she dosen't go ver far). I also have a mk1 golf in primer waiting for me to fishish the filling and prep it for paint. It just gets too much somtimes especially when the days are short and weather is cold and wet. The last thing you want to do is go outside and stick your head unde thte bonnet.
I think I will start at the beginning, go through it all methodically and check everything again.

if you haven't already, i think this is a very sensible purchase for the rocco owner. i've had them for years. quite happy working outside in sub zero temperatures. hadn't actually realised it had got that cold until i tried to put a beer on the roof and the frost kept making it slide off

hi there try a compression test,my mk 2 golf did that,used to hunt like it was breathing.then would cut out,had a burnt out inlet valve,ta

if it will run, also worth trying a vacuum gauge on it. i posted about this the other week. amazingly unknown diagnostic tool

IT'S FIXED!!!
Took the carb off and the "new" carb flange was badly split. No idea how it happened, it was only 6 months old from GSF. Air was getting in there casuing the revs to rise above K2.5 then the 3/4 point unit was fully retracting cauing the revs to drop again. This was happening on a cycle
I diagnosed it by blowing fag smoke into the inlet manifold.
Put it all back together and retarded the ingniton a bit to cope with unleaded and it's now running sweet.
Only took 12 months.
