Body Work / Paint

Post by GTXGTXGTX »

Hi,

I have been doping some rust repairs on my E Reg GTX. All looking good and ready for top coat, a couple of questions;

1, Where do I get proper VW spray paint? I have bought some holts paint on-line (supposed to match code) but I tried a sample (not on the car) and it looks slightly different. I need LA7Y

2, How many top coats are required?

3 Is clear gloss lacquer required after the top coat?

Thanks.

Ive brought some rattle can from these people, Blue for a 1988 Mk2 Golf, grey for a 1992 Honda civic, white for a 1988 Golf, and grey for a 1978 Scirocco. All have been a good match.

Other place mentioned on here for a good match is this one, haven't used them so no idea on match.

Is LA7Y a metallic paint? if so I think you will need a lacquer.

I'm not great with painting so I'm sure someone with more experience will be long to give you a better answer.

When trying to get paint made up to match my scala, there were 5 or 6 possible variants of sapphireblue for that year. You e also got to bear in mind that the paint on the car will have faded, and the chance of a perfect match straight out of the tin is pretty slim anyways. And yes, it should have a clearcoat if it is a metallic (and I think some of the solid colours too)

Metallics are notoriously difficult to match for us amateurs. In addition to problems above, I have found that the depth of the coat you spray on can make a difference.

You asked where to get proper VW paint, have you tried your local dealer?
Failing that there are paint suppliers out there that seem to be able to make anything even the rare Havanna brown for a Storm!

Don't go to Halfords and use there paint mixing service, I tried them for the Scirocco as wanted to spray the boot hinges and the paint was no where near so got my money back...
