How to remove the dashboard air vents

I have a question, how do you remove the air vents at the far ends of the dash? There is a big vent on top and a smaller vent just below.

Is there a trick to prize them out without damaging them? I need to open the lower ones especially, because they are blocked full of dry leaves and feathers.

I read somewhere that you can install a fan motor grille from a Mk1 Golf onto the single-wiper variant Sciroccos, has anyone done that with success?

Run the heater very hot for a while to dry the leaves, then mush them with a bit of stiff wire, put the fan on full and blow them out :D

Instead of the risk of damaging them, remove the connecting pipes from under the dash and clear them out and then get a hoover pipe up there and remove anything from the ventsfrom behind.

there are panels underneath which prevents that, those look hard remove too

I'm with ianaudia4, its a pain to prise out the vents without damage to the dash or vents, there is less change of damage to anything removing the covers below.
Or set the blower on full with the air flowing just out of the side vents (up and down direction sliders both in the middle setting) and open just one at a time and see what comes out maybe with a bit of help with a dyson or decent vac going as well..

Dead easy to remove the pipes (and replace again!). The panels are only held on with a couple of screws and some expanding clips.
