Keys...first question of many

Now that I'm back in the fold (or will be very very shortly) i wanted to get a proper VW key cut for the GTI.

Am i right in thinking this is an HV coded one - and is there any way you can get a 'manufacturer' one made as opposed to taking an eBay blank to your local Timpsons and asking him to copy the existing key (itself a copy)?

VW still sell the blanks mate, you could visit your local dealer and ask them if they can cut you a new one!

as above, or buy a key blank from ebay in the correct profile and take it to your local key cutting place and ask them to do it (most will) or even do it yourself with a set of needle files. i've done it myself a few times to replace a snapped key, so i can keep trying it in the lock to make sure it works

If you give VW the chassis number I think they can find the tag code for your car's original keys. Assuming it's still on the original locks, classic parts would be able to provide new keys.

I think some Sciroccos are on AH profile (and with a few years' wear it can be difficult to tell if your key is AH or HV unless you know which way up the letters go!). Not sure exactly when the change took place or if it's even consistent to age.

that's the one Jim...needs some work (fuel pump sounds like a kazoo) and other bits done but yeah, i'll be Belfast bound with it soon.

That's not the original reg, it was SAN 999Y but the first owner kept that and bought a Belfast reg for it. it's a 1979 reg on an 82 car, but I like it.

Aye knew not original plate but cool that it's an N.I reg. Get onto crazyquiffs and get stainless bracket hoses etc and do with pump. Can't wait to see it dude!

Good man, I knew you thought the same way as me on such matters.

the plates on it at the mo aren't the modern font actually, but they're from a Jaguar dealer in Kent...they'll be getting changed when funds permit!

Realised yesterday that the whining from the fuel pump is actually the lift pump in the fuel tank as it's coming from the offside rear wheel arch, which had me very confused for a while...

Rick you will find it hard to hear the intank pump, I don't think the 1.6's injections had one! The main fuel pump is located near the offside rear wheel arch!

Aren't i glad there are people on this forum who know what they're talking about! well, that explains that then...definitely the main fuel pump.

Rick, try a search for a fuel pump, part number 171 906 091A. Don't go for a cheap make, stick with OEM Bosch or Pierburg.

Easy way to check if you have a lift pump in the fuel tank is to take the back seat out, remove the black round cover and look at the electrical connection going to the the fuel tank, if you have 2 wires there not lift pump, 3 wires there is a lift pump.
