Windscreen Chrome Trim

Hi All,

Has anyone "refitted" the chrome trim around the front and rear windscreen on a Scirocco MK1? I've ordered a new headliner and when that arrives I will have to take out the front windscreen and the 2 rear side windows to fit it. I am about to order some new seals from www.vintagerubber.com and really don't want to go for the "cal-look smooth" ones as I want to retain the chrome.

I've heard the chrome is rrrreally difficult to get back in, is this true? Would it help to get the rubber onto the screen, the chrome fully in and then fit the screen to the car? or is that just crazy talk?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Its not really difficult to refit the chrome trim it just takes time to make sure the chrome is the right shape and bends in the right place to fit properly, I used plenty of slicone spray out of a spray can with a straw in to the grove where the chrome trim fits to help it fit. It took a few hours to fit but had to keep stopping as it was hurting my fingers all that pushing so did it over a few days a little at a time, I had to take the chrome trim out a couple of times and start again as the shape/bend in the corners was not right so I found it easier to start again and shape the chrome while off the car than try bending it to shape while pushing it in the seal.

I fitted the chrome after the windows was fitted so don't know if it works the other way around...

When autoglas fitted a new screen for me a few years ago, the fitter said you should fit the chrome trim into the seal before refitting the screen into the car. He then proceeded to fit the screen without any problems.
