Leave them off, I much prefer the look without them.

Been thinking of doing this myself! Not too sure that they would be 100 percent straight again though so not done it...yet

I agree with Ben.
I took mine off after I had removed the vinyl at the window level and found the paint underneath to be immaculate.
I'll check the next time I am over at my brother-in-laws.
Is this the same location as the "purple" one used to be at as the last time I passed it was empty ??????

Im with bengould. Step awaaay from the rubber strips. I took mine off before the Storm got painted, way cleaner looking without. Each to thier own though. Try drawing them in on the photo to get an idea ?

I like them better with. Breaks up the slab of the side a bit and stops the kitted cars looking bottom-heavy. A coach-stripe does the same job on the non-kitted cars.

Sure is . Sold her and she is off up North. Had my gtx in the body-shop now for 4 months. That kit is a pure evil bugger to get right once stripped off the car.
Thinking she's better with the piping on however the door trims don't look in good nick so I might leave em off unless I can source some.

I am a big FOR! Firstly as Ed has said and secondly there are loads of numpties that don't give a toss when they open their car doors, at least they offer some protection!

You may find that VW Classic parts sell new sets?

When I bought my Gtx I noticed very soon that the previous owner had removed the strips- but only on one side!!
So I had the same dilemma, take them all off or put them back on?
I went for putting them all on again and glad I did, it all seems to match in nicely with the rest of the black kit. If it had a body coloured kit then I probably would have taken them off instead
