Mk 2 side indicator repeaters

Post by marcus »

Am replacing the wings on my 1985 GTL which does not have side indicator repeaters, seem to remember reading somewhere (probably on here) that they weren't required until a year later.

The replacement wings I have the holes for repeaters, so I have two choices, block them off before I repaint them - or fit repeaters.

So, I have two questions:

Should I fit repeaters or block off the holes to keep it original? This is my instinct, as the car is very original and I'm only the third owner and I've had it ten years. Presumably cheaper too.

If I fit repeaters, what bits do I need and will the existing electrics accept them eg do I need to replace the flasher unit to cope with the heavier load? Can't see any mention of them on VAGCAT. Saw the thread with the link to genuine repeaters on eBay for a tenner each but that clearly wasn't everything I'd need.

Your thoughts please...

To wire them in, you'll need a pair of lights with bulb holders, a pair of 5w capless bulbs (or their led equivalent) and some wire. All you need to do is piggy back them onto the front indicator and job done. The flasher should cope with the extra load no trouble. This car was from the days when towbar sockets were just wired direct to the rear lights with no extra relays etc.

To delete them properly, you'll want to clean all the paint off the area around the hole, and weld in a small piece of steel. This could be cut from your old wing. Then once you've dressed the welds, a quick skim of plop to make it invisible. Unless you want to go with a period repair, then you'd use lead to fill any unevenness

Exactly what Nate said, personally if go with blocking them off as I prefer them like that :-)
