Richie was kind enough to tell me about a plastic clip which attaches to the master cylinder and secures the clutch cable in a vertical position. The clip keeps the cable from pulling towards the drivers side of the car or rubbing in places it shouldn't.
My car didn't have the clip, but we were able to find it - the part number is 172 611 449 and I just thought I'd mention it because it's not actually depicted in the parts diagram (at least on VAGCAT), but that is the right part.

Good find Tom, these were not fitted on the earlier cars.
Did a search and these are available from Heritage VW at £2.08 but take 3 weeks from Germany.
