Gauge sizes

Post by Jack92 »

I was wondering if anyone knows the standard gauge size for the mk2 scirocco?

Basically I am looking at putting the 3 gauges where the ash try is and want to check the size before I do.

Also are they the same as the golf mk1 + mk2 and the audi coup?

Many thanks guys

VDO gauges are 52mm. Try and get VW ones as they will light up the same colour as the dash (green!) Audi gauges light up orange or red depending on year.

Sorry ianaudia4 only just seen that,

And I didn't know that useful to know thanks :-)

Probably won't buy the ones I found on eBay complete (3 gauges and the holder) as one was golf and one was audi lol

A way of mounting the gauges is to find a VW DIN sized radio blanking plate and cut the holes yourself, this can then be mounted where the ashtray is after a bit of careful cutting with a Dremmel or suchlike, or even repostion the radio above and the plate below.

A few people on here have done this and looks good.

Gauge Fitting

Post by Jack92 »

Right, So the decision has been made mainly as i have found a gauge panel already fabricated to go where the ash tray is so i am putting 3 there.

Has anyone who active on here fitted gauges to a mk2 before? as i haven't got a clue.

basically what i am after is 3 black faced matching gauges for Oil Temp, Oil Press and Volts.

Volts - easy enough to fit
Oil temp - Never fitted one of these so don't have a clue at al
Oil Pressure - sender unit will be required obviously, but do i need to keep the current pressure switch in use? as in put a t piece in?

I did see the mr funk said he had a guide for one of the gauges a few years ago when i searched? wondered if this would be of any assistance.

:help: :stupid:

:) thanks

See my post:

Make sure you get the correct range senders for the gauge range, e.g. 0-5Bar for the oil pressure not 0-10bar. Cant remember what the oil temp one is but I know they have a coloured ring on them for different temp ranges, think its white on the audi ones I fitted, and yes as Ian said the gauges are red lights which is different than the dash but my stereo lighting is red so it doesn't look odd in the console. Any Q's just ask

I have a VW VDO voltemeter for sale, see my thread.
Sure the oil temperature gauge goes up to 150 degrees?

Thanks rob,

I have indeed just found a full set of audi 80 dials, however it's just the dials so still need to find the sensors which could be the fun part

As for the gauges it's volt up to 16, temp to 170 and pressure to 5 as rob said.

And thanks for the offer Ian but was cheaper to get all 3 from the same person.

So next question... What does the sensor/sensors even look like lol

Are they the small type with 1 connection or the cylindar type ones with 2?

Thanks again :-)

Re: Gauge sizes

Post by Jack92 »

got some more questions... sorry ill get there in the end lol

Looking at the pressure senders now most of them are 1/8" NPT is this correct for the scirocco?

also some are 2 pole some are one pole? whats the difference

Does the scirocco have a low and high pressure on the engine? (basically where does the sender actually go, does it replace anything or shall i just use a T piece)

as for the temp sensors/sender i haven't even got a clue where to start.

:beg: :help:

thanks alot guys definitely owe you one

Is got the white Audi 80 ones that glow orange, they're bloody great but I need them in blue to match the rest of the dash.

I'm not posting this to be any help, I just thought I'd tell someone.

Alpine head unit and bulb conversion. One of the guys on here swapped the bulbs and soldered something but I can't remember what. Good thing you reminded me though as he needs to do some more for me, pretty certain he'll pop up soon.
