oil seal

hi hoping to change the timing belt on my 1.8 8v in the next few days and have a question there is an oil leak from behind the timing belt and i want to sort it out at the same time ive checked behind the top cover and the cam seal is ok so it must be from below am i right in thinking that there are 2 seals one for the crank shaft and one on the intermediate cog can someone confirm this is right also had a look to buy the seals at gsf and euro carparts and they just list them for the transmission end any info on what the correct seal is and where can i get one are both lower seals the same thanks

I belive the ones on the cam shaft and intermediate shaft are the same gasket, there is also one on the crank shaft at the bottom. I've changed to top 2 and its not a hard job its just undoing the bolt which holds on the toothed sprocket that the cambelt runs on which is difficult as it wants to turn, I placed a metal bar in the way and some thin wood to protect the faces of what I was holding the bar against.
I'll try and find the part numbers for you as I have the old gasket in a box with the part number on it.

cheers will i have to get the oil seals from volkswagen or are there any after market suppliers such as euro car parts or gsf

just had a look online and that seal seems to fit all 3 places on the timing belt side of the engine so hopefully thats all i need many thanks for the info

I did think the one for the crank shaft was differnet to the cam shaft and Intermediate shaft but I've not done that one so not sure, let me know if one does fit and how you get on as mine is leaking!

Not trying to teach granny to suck eggs but change the cambelt tensioner as well!
Whilst you are tinkering around doing seals maybe worth upgrading your rocker gasket for the 1 piece rubber one.

thanks yeah i did buy the full kit of belt and tensioner as ive heard that it can be either that will break and wreck the engine just got another little problem been for a drive of about 30 miles the longest ive managed so far and when almost home , and the car was idling , the oil light flashed on off , going out when i set of driving , oil is halfway on the dipstick , BUT ive not changed the oil since ive bought it , pherhaps its thinning out so i will change asap , anything else i could check

You should really change the oil every 12 months or 10,000 miles. VW filters are the best to use and not that expensive try your local vw dealer for both or you can order online (might be cheaper but don't know) fit a new sump plug seal/copper washer as well. Euro or GSF or if ordering from the same place as the filter below they sell them as well.

I use Circlip pliers to tension the cambelt once its fitted as they are cheaper then the proper tool, you need the end which is at 90 degrees. fits a treat!

Try your local dealer first for filter and oil, I only pay £3 for the filter and £17 for the oil.
