Plugs on the water coolant flange..

Hi guys. I have a mk2 1.8 carb model rocco.
On the water coolant flange there are two plugs on the top (grey and red) and one on the bottom (black)
Can somebody please tell me what each colour is.
My temperature gauge new reaches higher than just over the white bit. Where as it used to always sit dead in the middle. Maybe it's one of those sensors?? Help

Red and Grey are for the manifold heater and the auto choke on a Pierburg carb. The Black one is the coolant sensor you are thinking of for the gauge. To test the gauge is correct, take the lead off the sensor and ground it with the ignition on and the temp gauge should go to full deflection i.e. red hot! The only way to check the sensor is working correctly is to replace it with a new one (fit a new seal too). Not getting up to proper temperature is more likely to be a duff thermostat which is stuck open.

If you still have the Pierburg fitted and your talking about the ambient temperature rather than the engine being hot, then yes. If the engine is not getting up to temperature the autochoke may be staying on causing overfuelling. (i.e. rich mixture).

Nah mate. Sorry I didn't describe too well
I'm on a weber carb with manual choke.
If I have my foot on gently it's fine. But when I put my foot Down it coughs and splutters when I get to around 50-60
