Newbie questions about the MK1/2 discovered a love for them!

Post by monkriss »

Hey guys.

So i recently lost my mk2 golf and found myself looking at pages and pages of sciroccos. I fell in love.

But i have a few questions... I have £1500 to buy a car and i cant seem to find many mk1 at that price. mostly mk2's for sale.
Well i think so. I am still trying to work out the differences between the two.

The mk1 i think is the one i am looking for. stripped down, and not much to it. The mk2 i believe has more to the bumpers, has the trims around the arches and on the boot it has that spoiler with a little glass window below it?

Now this is what i am after http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g91/G ... 014902.jpg like.. beautiful.
Now that is a... mk1?

If i cant get my hands on a mk1 for £1500 but i can get a mk2. How hard would it be to change the bumpers, boot door and whatever else, to make it look like a mk1?

Cheers guys..
Monkriss - hopefully a scirocco owner soon!

one thing ive noticed with the mk2 is that they have a huge bonnet and once opened, youd expect a big engine bay but it looks like half of it is covered by a peice of metal from the front? what does that cover?
Think im gnna have to dip into my piggy bank for one of these :P

Take a look at a the main sciroccoregisterforum.co.uk website - check out the "Scirocco Timeline"

More info at Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VW_Scirocco

Basically if you chop the roof, front and rear off both cars (and the mk1 golf/jetta) - the "chassis" would be pretty much identical.

The closest you'll ever get to making a mk2 look like a mk1 is by installing (with some fabricating involved) mk1 headlights.

I think the days where £1500 would get you a roadworthy mk1 are long gone. If you want a good one, i.e. where the rust has been sorted, you're talking upwards of £3k. Not necessarily because they are worth this but simply because someone has bought a car for £1000/1500 and spent twice that getting the rust sorted and the car resprayed.

Or, like me, bought a car where they "thought" the rust was sorted - for £3.5k - and then have to spend another £1k to get it all sorted :dash:

The 'long bonnet' is due to the then new 'crash test regulations' that came in back in the day - think deformable structure.

As has been said here and elsewhere you're too late for a Mk1 at that price level/condition and what Mr Brown said re £spent is pretty much spot on.

Buy a Mk2 on condition whether you're looking at modding or keeping original is the best advice - there is more interest in them now but numbers have dipped dramatically during the last 5-6 years.

Welcome.

Early mk2 Sciroccos don't have the body-kit, which might appeal to you more. The advantage of this is that it also means you can see exactly how much rust there is, rather than taking pot-luck on the condition of the sills and wheel-arches.

If you don't want to do body-work, a mk2 is what you'll need to buy at £1,500. Even then, you aren't necessary going to get the best.

Hi

Sadly your not gonna find a finished mk1 for that price.

Personally my favourite mk2 is the gti. No bodykit and smaller spoiler, see link.

http://website.lineone.net/~dr.dub/gti.htm

Take a look at the other models available on the above site aswell. There were others that didnt have the bodykit but I think they were carbd.

Yeah i was kind of expecting rust :/. I guess id love it as a project car. Maybe if i can find the body for cheap with ALOT of work need doing, might get one.

But i guess for my price range the mk2 is good enough! and that the GTI looks alottt better thanks :D

As an example I bought mine for 200 quid 7 years ago and I wouldn't think it unfair now to ask 1000 back.
Mainly because of how well preserved/ looked after it is.
Main things to address is rusty filler neck whick causes most running problems.
Body work can be done by many places not too expensive.
If I was buying again I would get a roadworthy good runner that needs tarting up for 5-800 quid.
Then spend 1000 fixing up

I dont mind project cars but I HATE SANDING!!!
