EX matey. .
Tbh you're looking at a weber carb, fit a GTI non hydraulic head cam and better breathing.
You could fit a GTI gearbox to have a shorter 5th gear.
Tight budget wise that's what you can do.

Re: Ex engine ideas
if you're going to put a cam in it, i'd whip the head off, make sure the valves are seating nicely, decoke the ports and an evening with a dremmel to polish them a bit. have you considered shaving your hedgehog?

Re: Ex engine ideas
heater in the inlet manifold. lots of aluminium spikes (hence "hedgehog") which create turbulant airflow. "shaving" it, by sawing off all the spikes, smooths airflow. only a teeny tiny difference, but still a difference. obviously if you do this, you will then get the world and his wife telling you that you're going to get "carb icing" and you car will never be right again. carb icing is a very common problem on massive engined dragsters, running in hot and humid environments. small engined, relatively low powered cars, running a very low state of tune in the mild uk, very unlikely to happen. i've never seen it happen, and most people who claim to have suffered it, usually end up discovering they have a poor fuel supply caused by a rotten filler neck

Re: Ex engine ideas
Weber carb, 185 cam, bigger jets in the carb. That's pretty much all I've done to mine engine wise and it has made a massive difference to performance. Unfortunately quite a big difference to fuel consumption too. However if your careful with it you can still get more than 30 mpg.

I'll whip them out and make a note of the mixture screw setting and let you know later on this afternoon.

Re: Ex engine ideas
Hi,
As promised my weber set up for 185° cam
Primary
Idle Jet;- 55
Air Corrector;- 145
Emulsion Tube;- f30
Main Jet;- 127
Secondary
Idle Jet;- 60
Air Corrector;- 200
Emulsion Tube;- f33
Main Jet;- 140
And I think I'm about 2 turns out on the mixture screw. You might find you'll need to wind it in to get the emissions legal for an MOT and then wind it back out again. But being a little rich at Idle helps when the cam comes in at higher revs.

I have followed this thread with interest, but forgive my ignorance, I have heard of 270 degree cams etc but what is the 185 deg cam you mention? Is this standard carb?
