Mk1Storm battery

Post by paulc1967 »

My battery has just exploded whilst on charge. Besides the damn awful mess, can anyone advise the optimum make and output for a new battery for a car that is started precious few times and does less than 1000 miles pa. it is garaged so not subject to absolute temperature extremes. Do I need something that hacks more than 53ah ? Paul

The standard batteries are fine. I always disconnect one of the terminals when I know I won't be using the car again for a while; there are terminal switches you can install that make this even easier.

I always buy the battery with the longest warranty from my motor factor; usually Bosch or Varta where I shop.

I can also recommend a CTEK charger, it may be that your charger is the problem here.

But what would you regard as the 'standard' battery re its ah rating? I have seen 36, 43 and 50 listed as suitable.

Any Type 063 is fine, the Ah rating can vary considerably. I suppose higher is probably better in a car that's not used regularly.

Mk 1 Storm battery

You may have seen post in general forum, but I was just asking if anyone recommends an optimum size of battery for a car that is arranged and infrequently used. I have seen a range of 36 to 53 ah recommended. Is t a case of the bigger the better? Paul.

Your car would have originally come with a 45amp alternator and a 36ah battery, if you still have a 45amp alternator then a Bosch 063 with 41ah is perfect for the job.
Euro Car Parts sell Bosch batteries at a good price, far cheaper than Halfords! You could always try the dealers, you may be surprised at the price for a VW battery.

Have a look to see if you've got a branch of either Bristol Batteries or The Battery Shop near you. Mucho cheapness compared to just about everywhere. An 063 of reputable make (varta, deta, yuasa, bosch) with 4+ years guarantee and you won't go wrong

Thanks Ian and Nate. Problem will be solved and car back on road next week. Just waiting to see if I've eliminated all the acid spill. Car will probably go into hibernation in October so may leave it on a trickle charge for the winter.
This will be its' 34th (winter, not battery) since I originally bought her in 1980. See ebay storm comments string for more history.

if you're parking it up all winter, just disconnect the battery. bung it on a trickle charge just before you recommission next year

Mk 1 Storm front windscreen wiper

Post by paulc1967 »

Anyone got one of the single arm wipers spare? Mine has shredded its splines and if I can't find an original ideas would be appreciated for an alternative - wonder if a Mk 1 Golf would fit though obviously not the same screen coverage
Cheers

Paul
