what security measures do you take
Re: what security measures do you take
To be honest Nate what it boils down to is that if someone wants the car they'll take the car. Alarms are a deterrent but no-one takes any notice of them.
I noticed someone banging on about exactly how to bypass everything but to be honest that's just borricks. The average tea leaf just isn't going to have that kind of time or expertise to tap a feed to your fuel pump, they're scratters and hey want cider.
I'd go cat 1. You get the piece of mind of an approved alarm and immobiliser.
Remind me to show you what the bandit is currently packing, you simply wouldn't believe it.)

Well I've got a toad ai606 to go on it (didn't I buy that from you?) Ans it'll be parked behind locking bollards in the drive. I am still toying with a tracker though
Re: what security measures do you take
I spend the weekend fitting a sat tracker to mine!
I can either track via a laptop in real time or it will text me the coordinates in an already formatted link into Google. It also has a built in mic if i want to listen to who stole it and I can even text it to cut the fuel pump off. It will last 80 hours on a self contained battery and will even switch over to location based services via gprs in case the thieves cut the gps antenna.
...over kill you say? Hell no, the amount of literal blood sweat and tears i've put into the car.....nobody's getting it! lol

Disklok is a good deterrent. Halfords do a steering wheel lock that is Thatcham Cat 3 approved. I've got one of those as it was a lot less bulky than a Disklok.
I've fitted a homemade immobiliser to mine. It's diesel and needs a 12v feed to the injection pump solenoid. When the 12v is removed, a valve shuts and no more fuel. I'm hoping that they'll realise after a few seconds it won't start and isn't likely to!
I've also got a red LED fitted to the little blanking plate next to the ashtray. When the ignition is turned off, it flashes.
Can't think what else I can do? It's parked on the drive at home and when I'm away working, it's left in the yard which makes Fort Knox look like an easy touch.
Fingers crossed and touch wood, it's attracted no unwanted attention in the 14 years I've had it. Well, apart from someone snapping the aerial off and laying it across the wipers
The radio has a removable face and I never leave anything in the interior on show so there's nothing to break in for.
Oddly my biggest worry is the wheels. Only G60 steels but they're immaculate and have new Michelin Pilot Sports on which cost me £220. Annoyingly these would only be nicked to use within VW circles.
PS - anyone with a Disklok, weld up the holes next to the lock. They're access holes to pick the lock!

It was one of the cheap one's on ebay -
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151069951977? ... 1439.l2649
It has way more features than the usual fitted trackers.

I just have a switch under the dash that kills power to the ignition. Not major but in a rush or the dark it would be ready to miss.

Re: what security measures do you take
I hate to state the obvious but most of this thread could be a good source of what to look out for to a a would be thief.
Can we keep some the details to a minimum. I.e kill switches and Imobiliser stuff.
Even letting the world know you have a blinking led might make thieves think all our cars have them and a spate of break ins may occur to test the theory.
Don't wish to sound like a bore but I feel it's important.

Hi all
I have a thatcham Cat 2 imobiliser, Autolock 2000 steering lock and Amoured door plates, the later 2 being added after some bugger broke in to the car about 7 years ago and tried to hot wire the car, busting the door and the steering lock, thanks to the imobiliser they did not get it!

Can you please let us know your vehicle reg and your address. Did you hide the immobilisers next the the fuse box or the center console? Can you give me the exact model number of the alarm? Do you sometimes leave your car parked at home while you're at work? How much petrol is in the car?

Re: what security measures do you take
I had someone break the window on my daily and nick the satnav in broad daylight while it was parked on my drive (I was in at the time and never heard them).
Now I leave it parked on the road with the doors unlocked and nowt in it. Ignition key on the sunvisor so they don't need to mess up the dashboard.
That said, it wears a disklock and two hidden kill switches (fuel and LT in totally different places) in case they decide they want to nick the peice of shit whole. It'll sit there turning over but not firing long enough for me to go and dispense words of advice

Re: what security measures do you take
When I lived in Bradford some tealeaf scum tried stealing my astra gte lookalike. It was on my drive, doors unlocked, bonnet open, cylinder head missing. The screwdrivered the door lock (not bright enough to try the door first) shut the bonnet, smashed the steering lock of and tried to hotwire it
