Scirocco MK2 Lowering - Basic

Post by kyuLL »

Hello all,

I have a 1989 Scirocco GT which is standard. She rides high and is bouncy.

Can anybody reccomend any make/type of lowering springs? Is it just the springs that can be replaced? Im looking to spend less than £100 on this....

Thanks - Kyle

Lowering springs in isolation with existing shocks - cheap but not recommended.
ebay coilovers ,£150-200 - cheap and some people recommend.
keep an eye out on here for second hand suspension - i have agreed sale of my current Koni/Eibach set up on the 16v for £100 recently.
new stuff such as Weitec - check with C and R in Nottingham re prices - club discounts available.

Look out for a set of anti roll bars too Kyle, as the GT models dont have them fitted as standard, and they make a huge difference to the ride quality. I think jimmyconway has a set of front and rears for sale.

Don't ask me....it was like that when i got here !

Be careful though, I've just fitted them to my car and the 1.6GT has a different downpipe, so it vibrates a bit on the ARB.

I spoke to a mechanic today and he said:

- The car does have anti-roll bars
- Dont lower it because the sumps will hit everything and he has had 3 rocco mk2's, is he right??

it is possible to go TOO low but a lot of us on here have anything between 30-50 mm without too many issues - 40mm is a pretty good look tbh and unless you are driving like a complete clown more than ok on most bumps.

i had eibach -40mm springs on jamex short throw gas shockers. was very pleasant ride quality - nice and firm but not too lumpy. if you lower it, short shocks work much better than standard length ones, and will tend to last a bit longer

I used two Roccos to drive to my railway based job, doing some pretty good 'off roading' down accesses and along side the tracks (wish I had taken some piccies).

Both were lowered, 25mm and 40mm I think, and I never did significant damage to the sump on either.

Will I need anything else apart from the coilies? Ive never changed suspension before, it looks relatively straight forward.. any advise?
