Its that time. The clutch cable has successfully escaped! Its made a fairly sizeable mess and I'm feeling like its gone a bit beyond the adhesive repair patch. This will need steel work.

I can't decide wether to remove the engine OR the dash to get at it to do a proper job. Or both? Also, is there a steel patch available? I can only find adhesive aluminium ones so far.

Either that or I might remove a section of material and plate it over flat. Im not sure how this would affect cable lengths though..

there must be steel repair panels available, as i've sen pics here people have had the self adhesive plate welded in

Hi,

If you look on my project thread you can see how I repaired mine with just a piece of 3mm steel plate. Maybe a bit overkill but it certainly isn't going anywhere any time soon.

You don't need to remove the engine or dash, I took the air box and carb off and that gave me plenty of room to get the welder in.

My bulkhead hasn't gone yet but with rear arch welding required for a new filler neck I decided to go for preventative approach whilst i was at it.

I paid £15 for a bulkhead repair and after hours of drilling grinding and hammering I decided it was scrap, it basically doesn't fit the Scirocco in any workable way for me. So I made a panel that is thicker and basically wider spreading the load..

Piece of garbage I paid for on right and fabrication of plate..

In position, was welded on in three contact areas, primed and painted. It will be tidied up at a later date when something like the headgasket needs doing. One problem is the heavy D shaped grommet won't fully seat into the two thickness's of metal. However it already feels firmer :good:

Don't worry about that, just shove it in as far as you can and after a few weeks it will settle in the hole, I found with the repair plate like you brought you get the same problem. (Fitted one to my Mk1 Golf before the bulkhead gave way)
