New Sirocco owner and needing help

Post by Philseyd »

Hi all

i have just got my hands on a 1990 Sirocco. The first problem i have is it has not moved in over 1 year and the second problem is it is locked and i have not been lucky enough to get the keys as the are lost hence the long standing time.

Any help on getting in with minimal damage?

Thanks

Phil

If you are a member of the AA or the RAC they should be able to help you. I remember someone locking their keys in their car at Inters a couple of years ago and the AA helped.

I'm not sure it's wise to explain the best way to break into a scirocco on a public web forum.

As Ian says, the breakdown organisations are trained to do this sort of thing. Either that, or chat to a few people outside your local probation office and I'm sure you'll find someone who can help.

if you've not got keys for it, get in touch with your local mobile auto locksmith. they will pick the lock and measure it, then cut you a key to fit your exisiting locks.

they are relatively straight forward to get into without damage, and a good locksmith or roadside assist guy will do it in seconds. i'n not comfortable putting how to do it on a public forum though, sorry

mk2 door handles will fit, yes. popular modification where remote locking has been fitted is to fit golf/jetta rear handles (the rear ones need a bit of modifying to fit) to delete the door locks completely.

ignition lock should fit, but you may find the rocco stalks won't then fit (depends which golf the ign housing came from) so you may need to use the golf stalks. this in turn will need a small it of plastic removed from the cowling, as the wiper stalk sits lower down. personally i prefer the golf stalks, as i never liked the way vw stalks were different heights

also, if your column has a large spline adaptor, the ign housing won't slide off over it. the adaptors can be a t**t to remove, and someone told me a few weeks ago that it is easier and quicker to undo the column from the UJ in the footwell, and withdraw the column complete, then swap the housing and refit

The procedure to change the ignition barrel is detailed in the Haynes manual. It basically involves removing the upper and lower cowling (two screws) and then drilling a hole in a particular place (measurements in the Haynes) - you then put a screwdriver/pin etc down the hole and it will pop out the barrel.

As Nate mentions it's easier with the entire column out - but this involves removing the instrument panel to give access to the two "shear bolts" that hold the column to the body. Once you undo the two bolts you then complete the much simpler task of undoing the steering UJ from the steering column.

And it's sCirocco

If you are very lucky, the door and ignition key may be the same. It's worth a gamble, and much easier to remove a door handle than the ignition without a key in it. I did it recently with my camper van, got one cut by Dave at Dubkeys from the number on the lock (I used the boot lid, but door handles should have them too). Worked a treat!

Sorry for the spelling My new scirocco is outside my house now just needing some tlc and a mot. it looks like im going to have to take the steering colum out and drill the ignition to replace the damaged caused when moving it. also a full new lock set i have found some on ebay that will do unless anyone on here is selling any and then get in touch.

Thanks for all your help and i will post pics of the car and the progress that goes on with it as its coming back to life.

Phil
