boot lock on it's way out?

Post by Dutch GT »

Recently the boot lock latch wouldn't grab the pin and lock (close) the boot, so it could be lifted open by anyone.
I fixed this with a hammer! - took the lock off, bent the cast metal bit that the hook shaped metal loops through, and all was good... for 2 weeks.

It's happened again, does this mean the metal has weakened and will need replacing or should I just bend it further... or bend the hook tighter?

I'm sure it's a simple fix, anyone had this before?

Unscrew the part fixed to the car and pull it up a bit and tighten again, this schould fix it.

And please do not use a hammer to "fix" these kind of things. :beg:

Bending something out of shape is not the way. :stop:

Proost Joost.

Wish I'd checked for replies earlier... Just gone and used the hammer again! In my defence, I read a thread on the BTCC Golf being 'fixed' with a hammer so must have made sense at the time, and it was dark and urgent just now.

I'll try the proper way next time it fails. Must be bent though as pushing the lock barrel didn't quite release the sprung part.

The problem is probably with the latch. I had a similar problem and the solution was to leave the striker bolt alone and fit a replacement latch into the boot lid. It seems like you will need to change both now.

I left the striker well alone so that should be fine. If it goes again I'll get a new latch and leave the hammer in the tool box... Still working though so fingers crossed.
