Hi all,

Not been on here in ages, my Scirocco has sat in my garage for a couple of years since it ran out if MOT. Thought I'd get on with now as I got some free time and we really need another car on the road. Been having some problem though, trying to get the gearbox out so I can replace the oil seals, but guys it's not happening, I'm unable to undo the o/s driveway nut, heated it up like mad, got a big bar on it but it's not shifting - Fail there.

The next job would be to set up the carb, I'm not sure if the jets are wrong of if it's overfueling as I just put a new fuel pump on. I think I'm just gonna get the garage to do it, I love the car but I guess I'm lacking patience and probably ability

I tend to undo the d/s at the gearbox end,
I find the multi-splined bolts come out without too much grunting and swearing!

I didn't trythat as that is the only torque head missing from my set and had heard it was a nightmare.

Should I try that then?

I've done a couple of golfs and scirocco's using that method and they have all been easy, in fact in one case the bolts had already worked loose!
Multi-spline tool is essential, if its got a longish shaft it will help because it helps clear the inner cv boot, but I've done it ok with a shorter shaft version (the boot may get in the way a little bit.)
I use string to support the d/shafts - (it stops strain on the cv joints)

To undo the hub nut you need a long scaffold bar, 6 sided deep socket and I used an old torque wrench. here is the bar I use.


I changed my gearbox seals with the gearbox still in the car.

I use a bar as above.
To stop the drive shaft turning, I jack up the car, remove the wheel and bolt another bar with drilled lugs welded to it to the hub. This digs into the ground to stop the hub turning. Dead easy.

I done the same, one side off easy, the other side won't shift, just gonna snap my wrench.

The inner bolts on the driveshafts are being no easier, someone's been at them before :-/

I got one of the driveshaft bolts out, is it a specialist tool? The set I've been using are not a proper fit. If so, has anyone got one I can borrow?

I got a set from gsf a long time ago, it had a short one for my d/shafts and also a longer, larger one for the head bolts.
Shame you're not nearer I got a good range of multisplined, (i'm in northants)

I've known someone who thought the drive shaft bolts were allen heads and rounded them off, if I encounter this kind of situation I have successfully used a slightly larger multispline and hammered it in, so far has always worked (I only do this if I'm sure the head of the bolt is already knackered)
pic below is the one I use, M8 size, and has been very effective.

get a "pokey thing" and scrape all the crud out from the head before you start, then tap the bit in with a small hammer to make sure it's fully in there. it should be a 12 point start bit as above, but i have also seen them with 6 point (torx) or allen in there too (presumably not original) so make sure you're using the right one
