running problems
hi all just bought my new 1989gt2 very pleased with it the car has been laid up for a long time and as such has a few problems
the idle is quite bad you have to rev it a lot otherwise it cuts out not sure which carb is fitted think its the original one I have removed the air box (filter was covered in oil) to get a better look a manual choke is fitted which I am not sure it is working properly so that could be one problem also when I press the accelerator on the side of the carb fuel seems to come out of the top of the carb in a mist (cant be right) there is also a wire at the front of the carb (black I think ) not connected to anything any one know where it should go should I remove the carb and try to clean it I have seen rebuild kits on fleabay for about 30 quid is it easy enough to do what kind of carb is fitted to my scirocco as standard loads more to do but not planning on using the car until summer thanks

Re: running problems
I think you might have a webber carb as they came with a manual choke and the original carb would be auto choke but I not 100% sure, photos are best.

Re: running problems
Also have a look at the fuel filler neck, inside the pipe and under the wheel arch as they rust and dirt gets into the fuel system.

Re: running problems
thanks checked this morning and it is a webber carb are they easy to overhaul also noticed manual choke not working properly so that could be a problem there is a wire at the front of the carb does anyone know what it could be for i have some more wires in the original loom that dont go anywhere as well i will post some piccys when i get more time
Re: running problems
managed to get the car running today opened the choke and the car started then when I rev it the revs stay about 2500 rpm so I push the choke in and the car stalls deffo needs an overhaul just not sure how any tips helpful also noticed that oil was leaking from near oil filter housing not sure if it is the oil pressure switch or where oil filter housing joins the block where can I get a new seal from

Re: running problems
It's an oil temperature sender on the filter, I've had a couple leak over the years, you could still get them from VW last year when I got mine, just make sure it comes with a new sealing washer.jond wrote: also noticed that oil was leaking from near oil filter housing not sure if it is the oil pressure switch

Re: running problems
Um, the carb models don't have the oil temp sender as standard, so it will be one of the pressure switches that is leaking most likely. I can't remember where I got my last one from, it wasn't VW as they couldn't get me the right part.

Re: running problems
I didn't know that the GT2 didn't have a oil temperature gauge. I've got one on my Mk1 Scirocco and Golf, standard equipment.

Re: running problems
I think the oil temp gauge was replaced with a voltmeter in the GTX, and the lower-spec and later cars just have a blanking plate.

Re: running problems
Oil temp is on the MFA when the DX engine was fitted, yep GTX had a voltemeter as did 1,8 GTi's.

Re: running problems
Of course, that explains it, hadn't really thought about the MFA.ianaudia4 wrote:Oil temp is on the MFA when the DX engine was fitted, yep GTX had a voltemeter as did 1,8 GTi's.

Re: running problems
thanks for your replys i will get some time on friday to have a look though i did notice oil running down passed the sump if it did turn out to be leaking from the sump(dont think it is likely) is this a big job i priced a gasket up from euro car parts for about 15 quid
Re: running problems
found sometime today unplugged rubber cover on top of oil pressure switch on filter housing and it was soaked in oil so hopefully that's the problem will try euro car parts to see if they have one just got to sort out the dodgy carb now any tips on an overhaul planning on giving the paint a good dose of autoglym tomorrow had enough of spending the last 2 days under the bonnet so ill give the exterior some tlc instead by the looks of it its has not bee done since the nineties

Re: running problems
Just to say that is normal. It will be the accelerator pump jet. This squirts a mist of fuel in when you press the accelerator to richen the mixture slightly and briefly.jond wrote:when I press the accelerator on the side of the carb fuel seems to come out of the top of the carb in a mist (cant be right)
