hi there im new to the scirocco world i have just bought myself a 1990 gtII its a very nice car that needs a few little jobs doing to get it back on the road at the minute i am just doing general maintanance i need a little help if possible firstly is there any particular oil i should be using as the car needs an oil change badly lol and is there any things i should be keeping an eye on known problems and so on hope this isnt to boring for you lot in the know cheers

A good buy at the moment is from your local VW dealer, Synta Silver, recommended for your car and only costs about £17 for 5 litres. While you are there you should pick up a genuine VW oil filter for about £3 (don't forget a sump washer for pennies!).

thanks for the reply mate it looks like a trip to my local vw dealer tomorrow lol then off for an mot after them bits are done

Not boring, here to help new owners of our beloved Rocco's :good:

Here are a couple =

Reach up with a hose and your bare hand to clean up inside the rear o/s wheel arch where the fuel filler pipe bend away from the inner wing on it way to the fuel cap. A right mud trap there. It causes rust in the fuel filler pipe and thence into the tank. Also causes corrosion of the inner wing. Very common issue and replacement fuel filler pipes ain't cheap.

Then, carefully check ALL the little black vacuum pipes on the carb. There are about 6 of them. Easiest to take the carb off (15 minutes) but make real pen and paper notes (or photos) of where all the pipes and wires where before taking them off. Tiny cracks in those vac pipes appear often and cause poor slow running, esp when cold. Many a perfectly OK Pierbugh carb has been ditched as "duff" and a £160+ Webber fitted when it wasn't needed because of those pipes (oh and a couple of other things such as sticky / non working solenoid(s) on the back of said carb.

Then check the boot floor and all the carpets for any dampness. Leaks can appear from the lower windscreen corners and from the boot seal or tail light seals (not to mention a couple of other places !)

thanks for the reply mate now that you mention the carb pipes i was checking the engine over yesterday and one or two of them felt quite wet so i will check them further tomorrow the car already has the webber carb fitted i will check the rear arch for mud at the same time aswell i am finding and sorting little problems everyday but when i consider the car has been stood for many many years its in great condition

Worth checking when the cambelt and brake fluid were last changed, preventitive maintenace, can't beat it!

the cambelt is on my list mate cos although its got full service history it dosnt mention the cambelt so im just going to do it anyway mate better safe than sorry lol
