9A scirocco engine conversion

Will a 1988 9A 1.8 16v from a Mk2 Golf, fit into my 1991 Scirocco along with the electrics being plug and play?

A 1988 Golf didn't come with a 9A so I assume its been converted?
If that's the case, it depends what else was used from the donor Corrado....
...but yes, fundamentally it will physically fit AND electrics should be compatible if they haven't been messed with - both the 88 Golf and 91 Scirocco share the same fusebox.

However, plug and play? Nope.

There's potentially a whole world of hurt ahead - fuel system, gearbox, driveshafts, exhaust etc etc but without knowing more about the Golf and your Scirocco it's impossible to give a fuller answer.

I am just trying to find out if it has been converted.

Concerning the fuel system, gearbox, driveshafts and exhausts. Would a donor corrado be the best route to go down to source the parts?

Looking for some help on what to buy and where to start with this so any advice is welcome

I have a 9a in my scirocco, which has been in there since 2007. I’ve used the rod change 020 gearboxes and my original 100mm driveshafts. For the exhaust I used a cheap raceland 4-2-1 tubular manifold designed for the mk1 golf and had an exhaust built to fit the car eventually. I originally used a series of reduced pipes to go between the manifold and standard exhaust.
I started with a carb car and converted it to fuel injection, with the fuel pumps and lines from an injection scirocco, the engine, management and wiring loom came from a written off but running Corrado, that was not plug and play however, it did require shortening some parts, lengthening others and stripping out what wasn’t needed from both original looms.
It’s all doable, with time and patience.

The engine I’ve bought is from a 16v mk2 golf which has had the bottom end converted to a 9A. As far as I’m aware I should just treat this as a 9A as the blocks are the same.

As I’m going to keep it carb will I be able to source the fueling system from a corrado with a KR engine?

Did you also need the entire loom from the donor corrado?

Early 9A engines used the KR cylinder head, later ones used the ABF, from what I've read, there's no difference to how they behave, in standard tune at least. The KR and 9A block are much the same externally and if one fits in the engine bay, so will the other.

All Corrado models were fuel injected, the KR and 9A both used versions of the Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical system so there wouldn't be anything you can use there. You will need to fit your own electric fuel pump to supply the carbs, as you won't be able to use the mechanical pump on your current engine.

Have you had any thoughts on how you are going to manage the ignition side of things? The 16v distributor only has a hall sensor in it, there's no mechanical advance and retard, like there is on the 8v, it's all controlled by a separate ECU.

So supplying my own electric pump for the Carb might be more hard work than fitting the fuel injected assembly? Especially if I could source it all from one donor?

I’ve heard that 9A and KR have a lot of interchangeable parts. Would this apply to the fuel injected system?

Believe me my electronic understanding is minimal and was going to buy the appropriate looms and then outsource a specialist company. Might be expensive but it saves me the hours of trying to get it right.

As Tim has done, use your own gearbox/clutch/flywheel and driveshafts - that's a massive pain in the arse dealt with.

If you go carb route -

Convert to twin 40 or 45 DCOE carbs with appropriate intake manifold.
Fuel supply is incredibly simple - a Facet Red/Silver Top pump, a Filter King (aka Malpassi) combination fuel filter and pressure regulator and a few metres of 8mm rubber hose.
The wiring for the pump is pretty simple - bearing in mind the fuse box is the same for cars and injection Sciroccos you can swap a relay and run a single extra wire to the pump.
The hardest part here will be the ignition timing as the 16v distributor doesn't control the timing like your 8v one does- an easy solution is to get the KR ECU and wiring from a mk2 Golf. Other solutions include a Peugeot distributor.
You'll need a 16v conversion exhaust manifold - most off-the-shelf ones are designed LHD and will sit on (and melt) your steering rack gaiter. Ashley make one designed for RHD.
You'll also need a bigger bore exhaust to cope with the extra power.

NOT cheap this conversion lark

Sourcing the ECU from a golf must be the easier way.
Cheers for the heads up on the exhaust manifold. I will bear that in mind for the future.

Does this information above also apply to a KR 16v engine?

Yes, KR & 9A are externally identical.
