Repair of early instrument cluster - oil pressure warner

Hi folks,

At long last I managed to, I think, find the reason for my oil pressure warning buzzer and light coming on above 2000 rpm but only occasionally in my Mk2 Storm.

Long story: Changed conrod bearing shells and pump less than a year ago, then after Stnaford Hall on a local trip the pair came on again :ire:

Gave the Storm to a garage (what mistake that was), requesting an oil pressure check (didn't have a gauge myself at the time). Instead the garage strips the bottom end, confirms the shells and journals to be fine. Then hand over new genuine VAG oil pump (had fitted an ECP Circoli part 1 year ago) and filter. Problem still there occasionally. Paid large bill, minus costs for broken smoked indicator lens (muppet from AA allegedly reversed into my Storm on the garage grounds), not happy at all ... also because the whole nightmare took 4 weeks :ire:

Once back home, stuck on my own oil pressure gauge, and within half an hour confirmed nothing wrong with the engine.

Last night rang through the yellow and blue/black leads to the 2 oil pressure sensors right up to the instrument cluster - all OK. Noticed a solid 12 V at the blue/black wire (going to the 0.3 Bar sensor), but not on the yellow lead (going to the 1.8 Bar sensor). That voltage was fluctuating all over the place. Measured again at the back of the instrument cluster, same.

So, guess the oil pressure circuitry inside the cluster is shot.

It's a VDO unit, with yellow upshift LED and mpg indicator. Can these be repaired, as they may be getting a bit thin on the ground, I guess. If anyone has repaired these, I assume it may be a knackered power transistor or op-amp that's no longer pushing out 12 V on the yellow lead.

Any help appreciated.

Replace the oil pressure buzzer circuit board - approximately £35.

No. 13 on here (for example)

Thanks Pete, figured it might be that part, having taken apart a spare (but already broken one) that I had lying around

Didn't realise they still exist, though.

Well, it was two or three years ago that I got a new one, so knowing VW it could have gone obsolete by now. If you can't get hold of one let me know and I will liberate one from one of the spare sets of clocks I have.
