Non VAG - Punto fuel filling up issues

Hi,

My girlfriend has a 06 Punto Petrol (yes I know this is for scirocco isuuses but can't find anything on other forums).

When she fills up (it's done it to me too) it clicks off (i.e on the fuel nozzle), not just once or twice but many times each time she fills up. It's been getting a bit worse but not sure what the problem is. Any ideas from any of you great mechanic's?

The only thing I notice is there is a plastic insert inside the actual fuel filler pipe - not see this before on cars, but then don't have newer cars! :vcool:

the plastic bit is to stop you putting a diesel nozzle in there.

try adjusting the angle of the pump (turning it so it points round the side etc) or just fill slower. some pumps seem to be worse than others for this. i somethimes have this problem with the caddy

My wifes 2002 Polo is a pain to fill up sometime, just try changing the angle of the filler hose and don't fill it up to fast, a right pain when its cold and windy!

If your breather system is clogged, the air won't displace quickly enough when you start pouring fuel in, so it'll fill up the filler neck rather than settling in the tank.

Something to look at if it isn't a simple matter of flow rate from the pump (do you always use the same petrol station?).

Hi, she fills up (as have I with that car) from different petrol stations. Will see if can see the breather.

Does it to me sometimes if i push the nozzle in too far.
Breather sounds like a good place to check first though.
