Where can I but LP7Y spray paint.
As far as I can find out it is called FLASH SILVER METALIC and is for an 1987 GT.
I have tried my local Halfords with no luck.
Will I have to go to a main dealer or is there a reasonable priced online place that anyone can recommend ?
All replies welcome, the more the better.

Several years ago now I went to my local partco I think it was, I gave them the paint code and they made up a rattle can on the spot. It was a pretty good match on my door mirrors at least! Might be worth talking to some local motor factors.

My local halfords made it up for me while I waited. About 13 quid a can. One thing the bloke told me was they do 2 versions of the paint colour, one of their codes has an additional letter at the end (maybe an R or S but can check my old cans for you) and this colour was a much better match as the first can I got was too bright. It was flash silver also.

I phoned them back today and was quoted £13+ for a can that is 300ml.
I have the bottom half of the passengers door and the front O/S wing to do so would probably need 3 / 4 cans.
Going to check in a local garage tomorrow if they would do it and at what price.
By the time I pay £50 quid and end up making an a--e of it I may be better getting it done professionally.

Somewhere near you will be a place that makes up paint for local bodyshops from the manufacturer's codes.
These are the people I use for any paint I need. I don't know how much these companies charge for rattle cans, as I use a spray gun.

Being in the trade, and running a bodyshop, i would recommend having it done properly. If you try (and fail) yourself with a rattle can, it could cost alot more to put right professionally than just going straight to a bodyshop in the first place.

It's pretty much impossible to get an acceptable finish with celly or acrylic out of an aerosol. If a bodyshop is then given the task of doing it properly, their correct process of basecoat and 2k lacquer can react with the aerosol paint you've already put on the panel, causing a 'bit' of a headache. = bigger bill!
Also, silvers and golds are a pain in the harris to match! Even if the basecoat is mixed 100% spot on, the direction of the spraying can affect the shade as the pigment will sit differently on the panel.

I checked in one paint shop today and was told that to do one door would be £240.00.
They would also prefer it on the car so they can "overspray" onto the surrounding panels if need be, to get a good match.
I also need the front O/S wing done which makes it up to £480.00 which under present circumstances is unfeasible.
So at these prices "the hunt goes on".

Hello mate,

A+L paints in Kilmarnock make up colour match rattle cans. Their number is 01563 524330, try giving them a call. You might well need laquer along with the paint for metallic which is always going to be hard to get a good finish or for that matter a matching finish. I'm sure your the sort of person who would get good results.

I've also got a great article on rattle can painting in one of my practical classics mags. I'll give you a call tomorrow if I can about those bits too. Could maybe even bring you some cans up your way.

at least you only had a choice of 2! i got them to do a few cans of sapphireblau for me, and was given the choice of 5 possible shades and 2 possible spellings

the first batch did the top half of the drivers door, the 2nd batch did the bottom half. neither of them were right

i think they prefer the term "blend" as opposed to "overspray" ;)

the last garage i worked for had a bodyshop. the rule of thumb they used was £200 per panel to prep and paint, more if repairs were needed. bodywork is usually very much of a "you get what you pay for" service

Phoned A+L Paints and the cans are £10.40 per 400 ml can, cheaper and bigger than Halfords (£13.99 per 300ml) but the same price if I have to go for them (petrol).
If you are planning a visit could you pick up two cans for me and I'll pay you when you get here.
A scan through your mag would be beneficial as well.

I thought a tad expensive as well but it is the old story "you get what you pay for".
He did say that that was the top price and if I had it prepared to a good standard it would be less.
I have filled, sanded and primed the door and have given it a couple of coats of silver paint prior to rubbing down again.

I had seen this pic before but never thought anything about the door til you pointed it out.
Just thought it was reflections / shadows.
The darker panel on yours is the bit I want to touch up, ie the bit below the rubber strip to the bottom but mine has the rubber body mould along the bottom so that will be undrecover.
Maybe he did say "blend" but by this time I was crawling about on the floor looking for my walking stick after the initial shock of £240.00 had left me legless.

This worries me a bit as well as after rechecking paint code in the boot I noticed it was LP7Y so I am now re-tracing my steps to see if I have been looking for the right paint.

I HAVE CHANGED THE HEADING TO THE CORRECT PAINT CODE LP7Y

You have the correct code, for some reason Halfords list two versions of it...the guy who made it up for me had no idea why....

I had some paintwork done on my Storm when I first got it as the lacquar on the passenger door was bolloxed! This a few other areas cost me £200 in a bodyshop in Newcastle and he matched the paint spot on.

I would be grateful if anyone who replied to this post could edit the subject heading to LP7Y paint and NOT LP9Y as the idiot who posted it made a mistake in the title.
I thought if I altered the original one the rest would follow suit, wrong again.
Just incase there are other people like me out there who like a challenge and helping people find things.

LP7Y is the correct VW code.

metalic paint is a arse pain to match, when some herberts prized there way in on a door the only solution was to respray the whole side of the car......the general rule with respraying pannels is aprox £60 per pannel.
