just wondering with our sciroccos not being as secure as modern cars do you take a chance or chain it to a lamp post.

Chain it to lampost is good....or remove the wheels lol.....some form of steering wheel crooklock (doubles as a anti road rage deterant) and an imobilizer of some approved sort, also door plates as it is better they break a window rather than damaging the door as they pry there way in.

Aside from my alarm (which goes off whenever it feels like).

Disklok. I've never bothered with an immobiliser, but something Thatcham approved might be a good idea, depending on where you live. Sciroccos aren't valuable enough to warrant a Tracker, in my opinion (although sentimental value would be another matter).

One of my Sciroccos has a VW optional extra alarm from new - I'm sure it was the height of sophistication in 1983, but nowadays...

Disklock, any other steering wheel, gearstick or pedal lock is a waste of time.

No one pays any attention to alarms, and a car thief doesn't know if an immobilsers any good or just a flashing light til they've already bent your door out and smashed your steering column up.

alarm, immobiliser, large German Shepherd and a 'protected by witchcraft' sticker.

To be honest though with my cars lack of idle when warm problem Im sure I would be able to hear the car, get up, get washed, dressed, do my hair and make-up, put a washing load on, and walk the dog before they had managed to get him to move off in 1st gear

i know if someone wants to have a go at your car they will do i am just thinking that if some young pup fancys an easy target by the time i have paid the excess on the insurance and what they say it is worth its proberly going to be not worth claiming and i would be without a car

It's also a huge visual deterent - you can't miss it!

I (clearly) disagree. To your average joyrider, it's an extra hassle that will encourage them to look elsewhere - and it appears that joyriders have been the ones taking sciroccos recently. Anyone who's determined to take a car will get it, though.

Tbh, all 80's gti spec vw's are at risk, all you can do is make it as difficult as possible for the thief, a good visual crook lock ( those that cover the wheel are the best)...My brother left his gtx with a airport car parking company and when he returned to the uk it was clear that they had taken it for a good clearout as part of their service !!!!

Door plates and an approved immobiliser. Not recently, but when I first had the car many moons ago came back to a smashed window a few times,easy fix. The thieves realising a working immobiliser installed and they wallked a way. Chained steering wheels will only encourage your thief to make two cuts in the steering wheel. Anybody on here thought of fitting a tracker. There are some cheap ones on Ebay at the mo. Lynn T your car sounds the dogs!! Must go like a rocket when its warmed up. Also make sure your insurance is agreed value, not current market value.

my steering wheel comes off.... just if i'm parking in a particularly dodgy looking place.
also got a factory fitted alarm... but i rarely use it because its annoyingly sensitive. really should have a look at it.

Alarm, door plates and Garage. I've been a pit paranoid since my last one was stolen.

I'm also paranoid about where I leave it after a bunch of delightful young lads tried to start a fight with me outside Northampton cinema. If I'd have been in the Polo, I would have put up more of an argument*, but I didn't want them taking their aggression out on the Scirocco. I won't take the Scirocco there anymore.

To make matters worse, my neighbors van was broken into last night and all his tools stolen. It was parked right next to where my Scirocco was stolen. I wouldn't mind, but we live in a really quiet village. It used to be such a nice place to live.


*also if there wasn't 5 of them and 1 of me.

I sound like I'm paranoid here but....

The car has a full cat 1 alarm system. All the wiring has been rerouted and hidden so none of that pesky cutting of wires. Fully realise that alarms don't really work so I've taken the precuation of making sure that if they're stupid enough to get in then the chances are that while other people may not care said tea leaf will be more worried about going deaf and his bleeding eyes than trying to nick the gearknob.
If it's at home then it's never parked on the road, it's always on the driveway right outside the house and if it's in storage then it's in a locked barn. I also have fantastic neighbours which helps more than any alarm in my opinion.

i used to try to remember to take the keys out, and occasionally i'd lock it. not joking either. the village where i live, most people still have the key under the mat. i do lock my caddy, but only coz the tools in the back are worth more than the van is

when i lived in leeds, i would park it so the towbar was resting on a lamp post, and then park my transit 2" off the front bumper. i had a cat 1 alarm, but only coz i robbed it off my previous car so that i could have remote locking
