Hi all,

Front driver's and passenger's side on my GTX is all wet. I have removed the carpet last night to try to trace the leak. Will test it today... any chance it could be going through the inner wing (in the car there are holes for it?

Anyway, the fiber type sound deadening is all wet, dampy and not of much use anymore. Any ideas on what can I use instead? I spoke to my mate and he suggested using sound deadening of Jaguar...

any other ideas?

Most leaks in the foot wells are from a leaking screen, normaly from rust arround where the seal mounts, failing that its from water that has built up and found its way in via the heater fan or via the door seals although I would suggest its the screen.

Thanks Ben. When I was replacing the dash a year ago or so I have had a look at the screen edges and could not see any rust so I dont think it will be it. Heater matrix hmm dont think so either... I guess pouring the water over car again tonight :)

Have you tried lifting the seal where it meets the body work, its normaly rust here that lets the water through, also the bottom corners of the seal is normaly the weakness

the 90s passat that i scrapped had wonderful sound deadening in it - kinda like bubble wrap filed with sand. probably most similar vintage ws will have it. scrap yard time :)

When I finally diagnosed where my Scala was leaking from (clutch cable repair in bulkhead!), I replaced the sound deadening as it was a big soggy and stinking mess with household carpet undelay, you know the stuff that is always left over from having new carpets! Anyway, I used a few layers of the underlay and I must say it is a lot quieter than my Storm which has the original.

If you want the same as OEM then Newton Commercial sell it.

If you have a sunroof... might also be worth checking that too... if the pipe has come off at the front... it'll just pour water down the inside of your A pillar.

Pipe? What pipe? Please explain...

First question... do you have a FACTORY fit tilt and slide sunroof?

If yes, then there's a pipe at each corner of your sunroof tray (under the main roof skin) that leads down to inside the front wings and inside the rear arches. If one of those has detached or decided it needs to be component molecules again, it leaks water into the A and C pillars, depending of course which might be goosed.

Yes I do have sunroof and I have those pipes that go towards the front and back, I will be pulling the water tomorrow to see where does it leaks actually. I guess these are bummer to replace if thats the case of a broken pipe inside?

With regards to sound deadening - I wanted some stuff of another car but oif this is going to be the same type - ie spongy stuff as the one currently in then this is going to soak the water and will never dry in case of any leaks in the future...

I am really considering getting this and filling the rocco with that. It does not soak water... maybe I shal just make some small holes in the floor to prevent for water accumulating in the future?

The carpet stuff seems good although I would need to get it separately. Not sure if the above is expensive or not...

The pipes that go down each pillar are, from memory, plastic and it is usually the area round the pipes that rusts.
This causes the water to go down the inside of the pillar as explained earlier.
This was the reason for the demise of my car.

Old Mac Rocco, how did you go about replacing/fixing them? Can you get them at the dealer or is it possible to use some other rubber pipe in place of them?

I guess that will not be easy job?

Pulled out the two on the nearside today and they ARE both plastic.
The problem is that water lies in the sunroof area and through time it works it's way through the paint and metal
My problem was that the area next to the drainhole had rusted away, so the water was going down the inside of the front two pillars, not the drainpipe, and into the footwell.
It is relatively easy to fix and is in a seldom seen area, but make sure you don't block up the drainholes.
I would check it very carefully as you DO NOT want to replace the drain pipes as this involves headlining removal etc and could end up messy.
I have spare front and back nearside drainpipes if you are stuck and should have the offside out tomorrow.

Thanks guys. We have checked wih my mate today - he was pouring water and I was inside, and then we swapped places just to be sure :)The water was slowly dropping and making its way to the floor inside. If i pulled the seal slightly it was going faster.

I have tried to look under the seal and I could not see any rust there and I also could not see it when I have replaced the dash a couple of years ago.
What my friend mentioned to me (previous rocco owner) that it might be the seal itself that because of its age is not stopping the water properly

Suggestions now are: replacing it completely - front windscreen will need to be removed or trying to use some silicon to insert under the seal after cleaning and drying the surface underneath. The last time I used tiger? silicon for attaching body trims to the car and it is quite good I must say.

Do you think I shall try inserting silicon all round the window seal?
