Valve stem seals

Hi,

I'm looking to replace the valve stem oil seals soon (without removing the head) and was after some recommendations for a decent valve spring compressor. The prices vary quite a bit and although I'm not a fan of buying cheap tools this is likely to be a one-off job so it's pointless spending a fortune. Can anyone recommend a decent quality one at a reasonable price?

Cheers

Stu

Stu,

You can borrow mine matey, save you forking out for one.

Although pretty sure you're gonna need to pull the head mate, else your valves are gonna disappear into your block ;)

If you have compressed air you can use an adapter in place of the spark plug that pressurises the cylinder keeping the valves in place

if you makes sure you have the piston of the cylinder you are working on on top dead center the valve shouldnt be able to drop very far. you can always use magnetic pen to retrieve it if it drops too low. just remember to have the crank in the correct position BEFORE you put the cam back in ( also in the correct position) otherwise you will be taking the head off to replace bent valves.

They are a bugger to do with the head off, don't fancy your chances with it on and valves in..

I would check that you get the right size new seals too.
With the kit that i bought the seals were the wrong size. I phoned up local VW dealer to get the correct part as there are a few different sizes.
