hi all,just bought 86' 'rocco gtx,nice car only 76k miles!...runs like a bag of poo though!when i got it,changed headgasket,cambelt/tensioner,coil,leads,plugs,dizzy cap n arm as car was stood 4 a while.but wot seemed like a misfire remained with 'hunting' at idle or stalling n difficult restart. found filler neck to be heavily corroded[surprise!],cleaned out tank n drained it blew fuel lines thru,replaced main fuel pump,cleaned gauze filter n checked function n condition of lift pump,replaced fuel filter metering head[due 2 rust contamination] and fuel injectors.after doin all this, she still wont idle properly,still 'hunts',there's evidence of air in injection system and an air leak somewhere which can be easily heard, as well as loadsa smoke from exhaust,n still difficult 2 restart. i dont have any hair left 2 pull out,so bangin my head v v hard on workshop wall :dash: has anyone any ideas or experience of this? please help...

Have you tried the dealers for the AAV? I was quoted £130 back in 2010 from them!
I have a spare one if you are interested, pm me if you are.

yes, tried vw parts dept,apparently now obsolete,and none registering in stock,but thank you for suggestion. also tried gsf,euro car parts,and spoke to inter motor themselves.
yesterday i cleaned out the AAV by soaking in carb cleaner and will test it tommorow.
just want to get my 'rocco on the road now

If you don't want second hand and you are struggling to find, how about this?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Leerlaufsteller-A ... 5633ed7d51

The company is actually in the UK so you could give them a call.

I'm not endorsing them, just found the link.

thanks very much for the reference,this week i've tested my AAV,it appears to be in working order eg;
>its clean of carbon
>when warmed,the bi-metal strip moves the plate to allow/not allow air flow as governed by temp control device
>correct voltage (12v)supplied at connector with ign on and cold

when i got the engine to run for long enough, i noticed it still 'hunts' ,and will not accelerate easily.
tht is also coupled with back firing into the inlet manifold,and the sound of a definite air leak!
think i'd be right in saying,this is probably most of the problem?

hope i'm gettin somewhere close now,really want to drive my 'rocco :dash:
