Rattles and squeaks

Right, my Scirocco is doing my head in to the point where I'm happy to let it just sit in my garage and rust to pieces. It's got tonnes of rattles and I just don't want to drive it anymore. I need suggestions/previous experiences on what it could be.

I've got one rather loud rattle coming from the sunroof. I've placed unsulation tape on a few areas of it to try and stop it, but it hasn't helped. I'm going to try and cover everything with the tape soon.

One coming from somewhere near the drivers door. Could possibly be the rear ashtray sort of area though.

One rather loud one coming from the centre console.

A possible one coming from the passenger door, although that could just be the centre console one sounding like the passenger door.

Any help on common creaks would be appreciated. The car won't get driven any distance, if at all, until they're gone. I'm done with it.

Sunroof - Disconnect the spring and pull back the lining, you will have access to the mechanism, give a good greasing and also the spring.

Centre consol - Ensure that every screw has a washer and put some vasaline on it and tighten it right up.

The other areas - As above, just ensure every part of the trim is fitted snuggly.

Just remember though these cars are 20+ years old and trim and fittings have come on leaps and bounds in that time.

Yeah, but my old one was silent and that was 5 years older!

Thanks for the help. I think I'm going to give it a thorough going over next weekend when I have time. It's hard to express how much rattles annoy me!

My old Mk2 used to do my nut in sometimes with dashboard rattles. Always around the console and within, tried loads to get ti to stop. DId for a while then started again. Good luck with trying to get rid of them :)

On a philosophical point: things only annoy you if you let them!

Mine is awful for rattles, with the main one coming from the sunroof. I havent had a look at it but if I push the smaller opening up it stops so for now I have a football stud wedging it.

There is a very small chance this piece of information will help, hope it does!

try getting someone else to drive it while you investigate the loose things. makes it so much easier to find them

That's my current solution, but my sound system is awful.

Every little helps. I wouldn't even mind such ghetto fixes as long as they work. Will try that one!

I'd rather park my Scirocco on my nutsack than let someone else drive it. Passengers seem to do a good job of destroying my cars from the passenger seat. Christ knows what they'd do in the drivers!

but surely you'd need to lie in the road and get someone else to park it for you. kinda defeats the point a bit

unless of course it's a Mk3 detachable nutsack? If it's a Mk1 or 2 nutsack, it'll involve the same amount of swearing, pain and annoyance removing it as any other nut on a Scirocco... especially the ones near the rear undercarriage :hehe:

How about going out and removing the bits where the noise seems to come from, then go for a drive, see if the noises are still there - that way you'll know if it's loose trim, or other stuff. If it's loose trim, when you put it back, ensure you have every clip/screw and that it's tight and doesn't have stripped threads. If it's other stuff, it'll be easier to get at with the trim out.
I've never had the fun of a sunroof, but as it's above you, and close to your ears, I'd start there, as any rattle from there'll be particularly annoying.
