Any suggestions on reasonably easy engine swap options, looking at more modern VW's for theire lovely fuel effiency and power (i'm currently driving a 1.6gt so even a golf mk4 1.4 would be an improvement)
more interested in issues and differences in mounts, as wiring is no problem for me

Most Mk1 and 2 Golf engines will fit straight up.
Biggest question is what is your ideal outcome? Fuel efficiency? Performance? Both, a well performing engine with good flow on the same gubbins as you have will perform better for efficiency.
You may well be able to bolt up an AKL sump (1.4) and use your existing head or convert to complete 1.4 "stuff" as it's fuel injected, just not sure on the mounts (and stupidly I HAD an AKL block that I could checked before moving it on!)
Having said that though, you could look to getting flow work done on yours or indeed a diesel, but the efficiency is now somewhat lost with diesel being more expensive than 97ron nowadays anyways. The other aspect is tax. Dropping a 2 litre lump in will raise your tax band (if you tell Mr Tax-person)
If it's running costs, LPG could be an option, but again, the initial outlay is bonkers so really only worth doing if you're going to be pounding the roads with it.

its mostly that i've spent nearly a grand on my cruddy little 1.6 gt even had the recomended webber carbs put on it and still its got an air leak somewhere on the intake, it still runs like a lumpy sack of spanners and i just want something new and fuel injected, as definatly not period,
my last serious restoration/ upgrade project was turning a mk3 capri 1.3 into a fully updated 2.0zetec mk2 mondeo that just happened to be in a capri shell (very pretty, ultra reliable and modern), so was just wondering if f/e bora engines or newer passat lumps fit without complaint

They'll fit, that's for sure. 1.8T from a Bora, 20VT, they'll all go, just depend on the amount of additional fabrication work you're going to have to do, along with the rest of it, but then sticking a Zetec into a Capri I doubt you're under any illusions that it's going to be plain sailing anyways ;)
