Scirocco Register

My newly aquired GTX has a 'sunken' sunroof - it kind of hangs down a bit, and when you slam the door, you can see it move up and down a bit

Its currently held on with gaffer tape (hence the lack of pictures!) which is keeping it nice and dry, but i want to get it sorted

the problem i have is, when i remove the tape and the sunroof, i will nolonger have a seal, so need to get it off, and fixed in the same day (nowhere dry indoors i can keep it) so was thinking a new sunroof from the bay may be the best idea - unless anyone has an idea what may be wrong?

there are a couple listed at the mo, one says it fits "mk1 golf and mk2 scirocco" the other says "mk2 golf and mk2 scirocco" - i figure they both can't be right, can they? asked my local VW, who had no idea at all

Golf roofs don't tilt, so you need to make sure it's a scirocco one. I have a complete mechanism if you're interested.

A new sunroof seal can still be bought from the dealers. I bought one last year, £46 and me and PeteGli fitted it, always easier with two people!

Does the sunroof actually work - slide and tilt? What condition is the seal round the panel? If it is still in a reasonable condition, it may just be that the position of the panel needs adjusting. Haynes is quite good on this point.
If it does not slide and/or tilt, then you need to check that you have all the bits of the mechanism in place.
Don't worry about what it looks like - pictures will help us to see what's what, and what might be needed to sort the problem.

I'm going to take of the interior trim and tape off this weekend (weather permitting) and see what I can spot

can't tell of there's any movement from the sunroof, as its fully taped up, and also not being kept where I live - I have sent my dad to test this, so may have an update shortly. the tape also means I have no idea of the seal condition, would a broken seal make it drop, or would this just be to stop the leak?

the sunroof seems like it may be disconnected somewhere, as it does not move at all

The handle can be turned (with some resistance) about 3/4 a turn in either direction.

how much has to be taken off to see the mechanism from the inside? - sorry if this is a daft question, but my GT2 doesn't have a sunroof so I can't look, and I really can't remember what that part of the roof looks like, but I don't remember any trim panels

Sounds to me like hte sunroof sliders are goosed. A quite common fail.

You should be able to get the interior lining off from the inside easy enough, just needs a spring unclipped, but you NEED to open it... so wind it open at the same time as manually pushing it forward and up at the rear. You can change both parts with the sunroof still in the car easy anough, just needs a screwdriver and a bit of patience and can be done in under an hour. Changing the seal won't do a great deal until you've exhausted the mechanism side of it. I'll try get some photo's next time I'm in a poisition to.

at last got around to having a look at the roof today, I seem to be missing a few bits!
From the looks of the Haynes, I'm missing a bar across the centre, a spring and 1 and a half side support things

also found a quality check note dated November 1987, so presume all the bits were there!
i took a few pics of the mess, have i not spotted anything else that's missing?

The bar / spring combo hold the fabric panel in place.

The "things" that are not allowing proper operation is those slider doofers.

If I'm looking at this right then, the sliders locate into the slots in the rail beneath, and the centre bar goes through them, and also through those 2 hooks on the smaller headlining panel, and it should be back to general working order when adjusted?

will also need a new seal, as this one looks past its prime to say the least!

That pretty much sums it up, so long as the guide wires are in fine fettle. I would advise regreasing them whilst you have everything in bits though.

I'll see if I can dig out some photo's I took last year of the mechanism (if I still have them)

Hi... resurrecting this old thread... how easy is a sunroof seal to fit... i have a fully functional tilt and slide sunroof with a tired seal... want to get a fresh one off ebay ... Is it an easy fit (slide it on) type thing or does the entire mechanism have to be removed?

I believe you have to remove the sunroof to fit a new seal.
There was a guide some where on the net?
I've removed a mk2 golf sunroof (slide but not tilt roof) and that was straight forward and the guide was in the Haynes manual.
