Seems my mk2 is another victim of a rusting fuel filler neck. I've seen a few threads talking about getting replacements made up but there seems to be little action. I was wondering if anyone had investiagted the possibility of getting plastic replacements made up? Not sure how hard it would be or how much it would cost, just curious...

I have read teh thread regarding the BMW replacement, but it looks as though the BMW cap is not locakble, so not too keen on the idea.

I have a new mk 1golf one but it his steel.

There are stainless steel ones - and they come up for sale every now and again. ... Dear when they do, though!

Could you fit an aftermarket locking cap to the BMW one?

Or what about a lock on the flap?

I was under the impression that the mk1 golf fuel filler necks only fit the earlier mk2 sciroccos with the smaller fuel tank?

Finding a lockable cap is a possibility. Was really more interested in the possibility of a making up some plastic replacements, I have made some enquires, but haven't had any positive responses yet... Most of the UK plastics manufacturers only seem capable of extrusion, so creating a top that would fit the existing caps doesn't seem likely.

I have come up with one otehr interesting possibility. I found a thread a classic ford forum that hinted at aeroplane fuel filler pipe. It seems that this stuff is supposed to be really easy to bend and very strong. I'm still investingating this, because I want to work out how well this would work given that it would be exposed to all the dirt grit and stones thrown up by the rear wheels. I'll let you know if I find out anything positive.

I really don't see the problem with using a steel replacement even using a 2nd hand one. My reason is really down to the fact that the paints/stone chips/underseals/cavity waxes are so much better nowadays. Most of the original filler necks have lasted 20 years or so anyway.

My filler neck is very rusty but I reckon I can probably save it de-rust it and paint it up. I could even weld it (away from the tank) if needs be. Obviously corrosion getting into the tank might mean replacing if it is really bad internally. There are so many products and different approaches with this kind of thing.

I was actually wondering where you get the rubber pipe that links it to the tank, or have I seen it somewhere on one of the suppliers??

It was my thread with the BMW replacement filler neck and the original locking fuel cap from my Scirocco fitted and worked on the BMW neck perfectly well.

Flexible rubber fuel hose is available from Car Builder Solutions, around £20 per 18 inches. You could do all under the wing in rubber with just a steel neck on top.

Sounds like the BMW one is a good option if you can track one down cheaply.

^Thanks for flagging that site, I reckon sleeving that hose up most of the length of the pipe would be an option keeping it firm and padding it.

Another good site for parts, might look at solid fuel lines from there

Ah okay, hadn't realised the BMW one had a lockable cap, my mistake .

I don't have a problem with the steel necks (or better still stainless), but sourcing one in good nick isn't easy (or cheap), so was just looking at some alternatives.

I've been in contact with Europa, and apparently this stuff would do the trick (they tell me that it is very flexible, and although it is thin it is very hard wearing and would put up with the punishment of being in a wheel arch no probelms), all you'd need to do is connect it to the original top. https://www.europaspares.com/FUEL_CAPS_ ... _3778.html.

Think it might be time to go on a beamer hunt at the local scrap yard.

gsf is your friend ;) brand new mild steel neck and the rubber hose to join it to the tank both available. neck will need shortening if your car has the larger tank.

I thought you had to cut those down for the smaller tank, and that they didn't fit the larger tank at all. Obvioulsy managed to misread all of the posts oops.
Just one question, think I saw somewhere it saying that those pipes sit slightly differently at the top end? Is this true?

I used a mk1 golf one on my 92 Scala. After a bit of chopping it fitted fine.

Does seem to poke a little at the top and sit slightly differently yes, but has not caused a problem. The only issue is I don't have a locking cap at the moment - I never have more that a student amount of fuel anyway though.
