mk2 scirocco very hard to start when cold

as described really its a gt2 1.8 8v on carbs and its only started doing it when i changed the carb rubber mounting. From cold it will not start properly it runs on 3 cylinders for a bit then sounds like its building up compression because it spits and farts then cuts out. But when the engine becomes warmish it will start fine and run fine :/
also the oil light has just started coming on but after 3000rpm when driving it goes off. Could the oil pump be buggered to cause low oil pressure which wont be making the hydraulic lifters work properly?
please some help cause its driving my crazy.

Sounds to me like it's the vacuum lines down to the distributor not advancing the ignition properly.

Quick test... the pipe that comes off the dizzy, pull a length off so that you can suck on it... get someone to start the car and suck the pipe. It should change the revs when you suck on it, and it should also be smoother idling. You can do this warm or cold.

Check that all the vacuum lines are intact and you've not got a leak somewhere, they're cheap enough to replace, and I wouldn't be surprised if you have the original ones still fitted from new.

hey thanks for the reply and iv replaced all the pipes on the car. But it seems weird the oil light coming on when the car starts to play up also the cars start perfect and doesnt mis a beat when warm.

Have another read of that post - you need to check whether the breather is blocked (his was blocked with metal shrapnel because the shot blaster hadn't covered up the breather). Only takes 2 mins to whip the cover off and check.

Hi mate i have been havibg the same problems for ages now, i originally thought it was some dodgy petrol but after reading the post on the shot blasted rocker cover it all fell into place i repalace mine with a fesh shotblasted rocker cover only a few days before i had all my trouble, sounds pretty mutch the same as yours...i changed the carb, dizzy, plugs, leads, coil etc etc and its still the same, starts like a new un when warm but sometimes its hit an miss with the cold starts...but she's served me well over the last 10 years and 190000 miles lol
