Hi folks, need to get the linkages replaced on the gearbox and as i understand it, there are two types - a long one and a short one - anybody know how many of each i need??

There are one of each (I assume your are talking about the socket type links)
I think GSF, ECP do repair kits, there are different types,
dependent on how much you want to replace.
(Repair kits have additional various bushes/washers etc that also go with the gear linkage mechanism)
I recently used one of the GSF kits and replaced the bulk of gearbox linkage parts, result, much tighter gearchange now.

Cheers for that, i have found the kits but was just wondering how many of the selector rods i needed. The diagram from VW only shows a single set for clarity i think but if you want to do them all at the gear box end i was just wondering how many of each rod you needed? The bush repair kit i was going to get, the mechanic just said i needed the bush kit and the rods.

There are two rods with the plastic sockets.
Each rod has a plastic socket at each end.
There is one short rod and one longer rod.
Best get one of each as chances are they'll both be worn.

There is another long rod but that is all metal, (the one with the pins going through the small holes at each end)
In this case it is most likely that the bushes that the ends go into are worn and not the metal rod.

I got a selector rod front and a selector rod rear from eurocarparts last year, cost £7-8 each last year.

The washer parts I bought off previous to that not knowing that I needed the two selector rods.
BE VERY CAREFUL when re assembling as I had to play about with mine as I had a problem with 2nd gear.
Hope the detail that follows helps it all become clearer.
Selector rod front is the shorter of the two rods and goes NEAREST the gear box end.

Oddly, it's not actually that difficult to do, so long as you're methodical in your approach.

Knowing how they came off does help, rather than getting a random back of bits and then trying to fit them up :D

Totally agree, my problems arose when I removed gear lever, shift rod and shift rod bearing, (to clean) without marking it's position.
Refitting in the wrong position throws the direction of travel of the gear lever relative to the gear box out resulting in making it hard to engage gears, in my case 1st & 2nd gears.
Trial and error fixed it, eventually.

That's where digital cameras are useful. I usually take a couple of photos as I'm going through to help when reassembling stuff.

Worth a pm to see if this is suitable for your car ?????
