Where is the main central locking pump ( as opposed to the actuators on each of the doors, boot and fuel cap). Haynes states it is in the rear luggage compartement. The diagram kind of shows it in the below the rear windows somewhere. At a guess i would say its on the passenger side.
any ideas - thanks

In electrical? Surly the version you talk of is numatic?
...anyway, it's in the boot, cased in foamy stuff painted blacks to dampen the noise.
Don't know which side though as haven't tried to fit mine yet!

Left hand side behind the black cover, the right side is where your rear wash/wipe bottle is.

Hi - just been tinkering and I have looked in the boot on the left hand side behind the black cover and I can see no central locking pump - I have bought a replacement to mine so I can see I am meant to be looking for a black styrene box which the pump sits inside but it isn't in the boot that's for sure. Any other suggestions? I am guessing it will now be in the rear door cards.

It's defitely pneumatic?
If it's electric, the motors are in the doors themselves

Mmm ok did mk2 Sciroccos have electric central locking then - its a 1993 gt2. Basically I now have no idea what's going on now.

Ahhh right - cheers - so how so how do I fault find and what am I looking for. Basically I suspect the drivers door to be at fault - no proof but shortly before it totally packed up the drivers door sometimes opened ( manually I am guessing) and the passenger boot and petrol cap remained locked. Then I put the key in the boot lock and giggled it around and the boot and passenger and petrol lock activated and unlocked. could it be a microswitch at fault?

It could be... or it could be a dodgy earth, which to me sounds more likely and just a conincidence that it happened whilst you were getting jiggy with it on hte boot lock.
You best find out for sure that it's electrical though... and simplest way to check would be to get one of hte door panels off and take a look at the motor. It resides within the door, near the door handle. If I get chance tomorrow I'll grab a photo of mine.

Coincidence. If it is the factory vacuum pump set up, only the key in the driver's side lock will activate the system. Passenger door and boot lock only operate those locks individually.

yes as far as i could tell the central locking only worked from the drivers door which was why i was quite suprised it did unlock from the boot, all be it very randomly. I thought it might be some sort of overide. Ok cheers for the advice so far, will await photos of the mechanism.
