Really cheap immobiliser trick (unless i'm missing something

Idea came to me sitting on the bus this morning (Car off road).
Ignotion system runs about 2 or 3 cables into the engine bay yes?
Would it be possible to run them back into the dash and put a little on / off switch in before running it back to the engine bay.

You could locate the switch wherever you want (hidden preferably). This way you could immobolise your car so that the ingnition would only work when the switch was activated.

The reason I would run it back from the engine bay is to make it more difficult to hotwire. Seeing as when most cars are hot wired the keyhole gets yanked off and wired from there, by moving the switch further down prevents them going past it.

Is this possible?

Have I missed something crucial or does everyone do this anyway?

Your thoughts

Niall

People have been doing similar for years...

Another method that only requires running one wire, is to earth the coil through a hidden switch - will turn over but not start.

Or just take out the fuel pump relay for the injection cars.

Yeah that's what I do - you'd have to take the fuse box apart and figure out which wires (out of about 6) go together to get the car started without it...

As an auto electrician, this is the best of the cheap immobilisers :good:

Another one is disconnecting the battery neg terminal. They'll eventually figure it out, but its all about buying time...

Chances of a car thief happening to have the correct relay are fairly slim though... :p

What's best on non-injection? Don't want to disconnect battery as I'll lose all the settings in my stereo and clock.
