Temperature gauge problem

Hi all, I'm have some problems with the temp gauge on my 88 GTX (fuel injection) basically the needle doesn't move, the sender unit has been changed (the part with the two connections that sits close to the head) but no joy. Does anyone know where the wires run for this? do they go direct to the gague on the dash or via the fuse box, i don't think it's a fused item just wondering if it uses a common earth in the box. Any help would be appreciated!

Btw, the fan cuts in fine so the car knows when it's getting hot, it's just not telling me! :dunno:

The sender for the temperature gauge is a single pin - takes the single female blade - on a yellow/red wire.

as above yellw/red wire goes into a relay find this then run another wire and earth ot out if the gauge moves then you have a iffly relay if it doesnt move then it will be the gauge just done one myself in a mk1 golf

Disconnect the yellow/red wire from the sender on the coolant flange.
Turn ignition key to on (without starting the engine) - the gauge should read cold.
Earth the wire, either to the engine block or the battery negative terminal - the gauge should move to hot..

If the gauge works as above, but does not work when it is reconnected to the sender, the sender is faulty and should be replaced.

The relay referred to by bens_cab is for the Low Coolant Indicator circuit and should not affect the operation of the gauge, as the gauge is connected directly to the sender through the fusebox and not via the relay.
