Ok so ive started the long process of the engine conversion
Got a 1.8 KR coming next weekend but what gearbox should i use???
At the mo i have the 1.6 GT with the 4+e gearbox, will this even fit??
Im new to the engine conversion stuff but got plenty of time and in no rush to get it done so i can plod along and take my time
Will the 4+e box be able to handle the increase of power (assuming it will fit), it going to be a 1.8 KR running either twin 45's or bike carbs, not decided yet
Cheers,
WiLL....

4+ E Gearbox will work fine on there and mount up fine.
Worth putting a new clutch release bearing in with some nice clean oil..

Woo! That's the reply I was after! All I need now is the linkage kit to stop it feeling like I'm waving a sausage around in a cathedral when selecting gears!

The gearing on the 4+E will be a bit lazy though. Fine for cruising in a 1.6, but if you're upgrading the engine I expect you're after better performance, in which case you want one of the proper 5-speeds. I think the 'box in the DX (1.8i) cars might be slightly closer ratios than the one fitted to EX (1.8 carb) cars - even if there is a difference either would be better than the 4+E.

Better if you don't have a shag whilst driving if that's the case

Ratio wise I'm going for what is already in mine which is an ACD code, I have an 89 scala so easy ones to get and very similar to the mk2 g**f 16v box but with a taller 5th for better motorway cruising.
They're cheap enough to pickup and its pretty easy to do the seals which is worth doing while its out of the car too
Don't forget to do a conversion thread

AUG, ACD (both 8v GTI or rocco injection) codes are very similar, but AUG has a taller 2nd, which is useful on track. 2Y (16v golf) box has a 2% lower 5th, but otherwise ratios are the same as ACD box.
4+E box is a bit tall for track use, and you might find yourself changing gears for overtaking a bit more. Super economical on a long run though. 5th is about 15% taller than a GTI box.
