Tailgate struts (mk2)

Post by the edmundator »

An item that's often in demand. Your dealer will tell you they're obsolete (mine did). VW Classic Parts (part of VAG) will be happy to sell you a brand new pair. Both types are available, early ones for cars with small spoilers are Euro 29.07 + VAT, later ones for the majority of mk2s are marginally more expensive.

I thought this would be useful information. Another example of many dealers being uninterested in helping owners of older VWs.

Big date Jump into this thread, as the title is perfect for my question:

' Are the rocco MK2 tailgate struts specific to MK2 Scirocco, or are these in fact common with other VAG cars of that period e.g MK1/2 Golf ? '

I wondered, as there are plenty of fancy Golf struts about (chromed, anodised etc..)

The struts are pressurized to suit the weight of the bootlid - even mk2 Scirocco struts vary depending on the style of spoiler fitted. The length of the strut will probably be different for a Golf as well. I doubt there would be much crossover, but you could always check part numbers.

you can buy any length strut you want from somewhere like RS. they will come with a bleed valve on top to remove pressure inside giving a less powerful lift. only issue is if you go too far you cannot re-pressurize them.

find out the lengths you want, give them a call. im sure they could help :)

I replaced my struts with new ones bought from a compaany in Derby called SGS. They specify age of vehicle, for the different spoilers etc. The look OEM and work great and I think the cost about £32 a pair.
