hi , while driving home today , after driving down in heavy rain with wipers working fine , noticed that the washers were intermitanly skwerting water , next thing all hell breaks lose, with wipers going , washers going mental , so stop and pull wire from washer pump to stop them , still with wipers going so pull fuse from them , then continue driving , get on phone to 81gti, who sugests it the relays , so drive to his and swap relays no's 18 and 19 , no change wipers sill goind mad , so any suggestions ?

well if you've ruled out relays, best guess would surely be either the switch breaking up inside or the fusebox being full with water

I had a similar problem to this recently, where my wipers would stay on intermittent in the off setting. Only solution was to pull out the relay and just use them on the really fast setting/plug it back in when it started raining (not ideal). I was told it was probably a grounding issue with the fusebox, and inadvertently made them work again after trying to fix something else in the fusebox - so I probably shook something back into place whilst I was messing around with it. So I would suggest having a look at the fusebox to see if there's something dodgy going on.

have had i play arround the fuse box today and all seems well , am thinking that water might have caused the problem , cheers all for the advice

Yeah if you have a sunroof the dreaing holes can feel up, best to air blow them out with air blower from a local machic or tyre place as this stops the water running down though the fuse box.
