Hello there!

New Scirocco owner here from the Isle of Man!

I bought these beast as a winter car whilst my Supra is away for the winter.

It's an 82 GL 1.6 with a full service history and original interior and stereo!

There are a couple of things that need sorting which I'm hoping to do over the coming weeks with the help of you fine people. The dials (clocks) have stopped counting miles, the fuel economy light and needle doesn't work, the exhaust is blowing like mad at the downpipe, the original stereo works, but is no good for the 21st century, and most importantly the engine oil pressure warning light flashes when the revs go above 2,000rpm and stops when you drop the revs again!

Can anyone advise about the clocks situation or the oil pressure warning? It has been suggested that the wrong grade of oil is in the car (?) but again, not too sure about that.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Sounds like you have some electrical gremlins possibly a bad earth sould not be too hard to fix

Welcome! Sorry to hear you have some issues already... As already stated, could be earthing problems, but the oil pressure is a bit worrying - I assume it runs ok? Any mayonnaise under the oil filler cap?

I haven't checked the oil filler cap for mayo, but it runs really well and doesn't appear to be using coolant. Are you suggesting head gasket? I figured the oil pump is done or the wrong grade of oil?

Tony Mazallan had the same problem with his BBS GTi with regards the oil light and buzzer, we took off the oil pressure switch, cleaned it up and resoldered the cables with new spade connectors, the problem was solved, however it could be the oil pump which is a sump off job but they only cost about £35.
Might be well worthwhile doing an oil and filter change, best place for the filter is VW, and they sell oil at a better price than most motor factors.

With regards the milometer not working, change the cable, this is what I did on a GTX I had years ago, that solved the problem, these can be bought from GSF for about £12.

The gear change indicator is linked in with the reversing light switch, and can still be bought from GSF and VW (about £35), but before changing it look at the vacumn houses, they are a usual suspect as they break down and crack with age, these are only a few quid from GSF, in fact I would change all the vacumn hoses for that matter!

It was just a "better safe than sorry" on the Mayo - if it's not using coolant and running ok then no worries. Everything Ian suggested sounds like your next course of action!

IF it is the pump, it's pretty easy to dismantle and there is only 2 bolts holding it in... it could also be the oil pick up strainer on the pump is clogged with gung... again a straight forward job to clean.

When I stripped my EX engine the sump and coolant system were full of sludge... which happened to be the same colour as the mud that was plastered on every crevice in the engine bay. I'm surprised the engine hadn't failed with the amount of crap in it.
