Project Pink

Well I've finally got myself an early mk2 identical (well almost - this is an MY84 where mine was a MY83) that I owned back in the 80's.

1984 1.8GL finished in LK3V Champagne metallic (Pink on the log book!)

I intend to lavish this car with whatever it needs to get it as perfect as possible. It's been stood for approx 5 years but I've now got it running.

Needs a fair bit of work but is in very good condition to start with though.

Anyway, updates to follow but first some pictures.

I think it needs lowered, 18" alloys and a matching pink bodykit. Probably better getting it done the same time as fitting the diesel engine. :hehe: Seriously it a really really nice car. Whats to be done to get it up to standard?

Hi Neil

I want it to more than hold its own at Stanford Hall hopefully next year or 2012 latest. Totally standard (yet again) will be my theme

The paint is very very good but there is a tiny 'bit' of something on at least 5 panels. This really leaves me with no option but a full respray. However, this will be a glass removed, trims removed, spoiler removed, lights removed, handles removed, all panels treated etc etc to get the best finish possible - I don't want any overspray or masking lines.

But before this, a full mechanical recommission is on the cards. Stage 1 - MOT pass, Stage 2 - replacing any worn components not needed to pass MOT, Stage 3 - removing engine and cleaning up engine & engine bay, Stage 4 - Removing and cleaning/painting anything that doesn't shine like it should and Stage 5 - anything else I have forgot about.

Then, if I have any money left, I may get to tax it and drive it somewhere :chortle:

Hey Matt... Must be something in the water in West Hallam at the moment dude!! I've just bought a silver '84 GL :buddy:
It'll be getting the exact same treatment as my GT2 as soon as that's done, hopefully i'll end up with 2 identical cars... Both running 16v's and carbs :vcool:

Long time - no update but slow progress has been made on stage 1 (MOT pass)

Car spent a week or so at a mates having a damn good clean and interior valet. On it's return (and whilst idling in my workshop) the oil pump failed.

Anyway, sump removed and shells inspected and no visible damage. New big end shells, gen VW con-rod strech nuts/bolts and oil pump fitted. New sump fitted at the same time as old one was rusty and didn't fit over new pump either. New oil & filter, oil pump primed (to prevent air lock) and full oil pressure now achieved.

Other engine work has included replacing the 27 year old cambelt (was a bit loose!) and removing/cleaning/painting the timing belt and rocker covers during the process. The cooling system has been flushed out and fresh coolant added. Looks like a couple of new hoses needed as bottom hose a little swollen through age.

Have also had to fit a Weber carb as old pierburg has a sticking throttle, perhaps caused by standing for 6+ years but have left vacuum accumulator on so still looks original and have used only gen VW parts for the choke cable.

All brakes have been stripped, cleaned and adjusted. Will look into freeing off the front bleed nipples now so that the brake flexi's can be replaced as all the metal pipes seem fine.

Have replaced the bottom arms/bushes/ball joints with new and will be fitting new ARB bushes with original VW rubber when they come into stock next week.

Replacement lock set has been fitted as previous owner had misplaced the keys.

To do:

Exhaust - will actually pass the MOT but front/centre pipe are still original and getting a little bit too thin for my liking
Front to rear metal fuel pipes - new ones to be fitted whilst ARB removed
Gearbox oil - change
Top/Bottom hose - replace
Tyres - need some new ones here I think
Wiper blades - replace
Carb - overhaul and set up emissions

After this, stage 1 should be completed and MOT acquired - will update again soon.

Watch this space...............................................................................

Right then Another update on my '84GL. Well all of the ARB bushes and bottom arms all fitted and sorted. Front to rear metal fuel pipes also replaced along with the rubber pipes that go up onto the top of the tank.

However, after I returned to work after Christmas, there were some coolant deposits under the car. I know I've got some hoses to replace but, after a pressure test, found that a rear core plug had rotted through. Managed to get the old ones out but had major difficulty installing the new ones with the engine in situe.

So, change of plan. Engine and gearbox now removed from car to a) replace the core plugs and b) allow me to clean up the engine bay, paint block, replace head gasket, valve stem oil seal, clutch, gaskets whilst it's all out and hopefully get it all shiny shiny (but naturally standard looking) under the bonnet.

I know how you all crave pictures so here's some I took today:

One would assume but I can tell you, it's quite the opposite! It's a wonder I've got any fingernails left!

Right then, time for an update!

As you may/may not be aware, Project Pink passed its MOT on Thursday and made its maiden voyage home yesterday (taxed as well!) without a hitch. Went straight through with NO advisories :groove:

Need to upload some photographs but thought I'd list all the work done since my last post:

Engine was stripped, head removed and stripped and sat in an acid bath for a couple of days. Head then rebuilt was new valve stem oil seals, valves lapped back in etc etc.

Block was externally stripped, wire brushed and painted. All new gaskets fitted and components refitted.

Engine rebuilt with new hoses, water pump and thermostat, fuel pump, cambelt and tensioner, rubber rocker gasket mod, o/s engine mount and clutch. Gearbox was cleaned, oil changed and reunited with the engine.

Whilst engine was out, ALL metal brake pipes and flexi's were replaced, having already replaced the metal fuel pipes. Anti-roll bar rubbers and clamps were replaced. Engine bay was cleaned.

Engine then refitted and complete brand new mild steel exhaust system inc rubbers purchased and fitted. I know it's not a sports system but its got a lovely rasp to it! :vcool:

New battery, air filter bobbin, discs and pads fitted to the front along with new rear wheel bearings and wiper blades and, yesterday, 4 brand new Uniroyal tyres (tyre supplier can't remember when they last sold 175/70 TR13! )

I'm sure I've forgot something but I can update when I sort the pictures.

Still to do:

Weber carb needs an overhaul (got the intermittent sticking needle valve syndrome)
Double check everything is tight!
Vac pipe ends need replacing before Ian sees it :chortle:
Ignition timing needs tweaking
New barrel in o/s door lock
Reclean the engine bay (good layer of dust on it again)
Fit new bumpers I have for it
A bit of interior work (cleaning and steering cowel)
Remove oily finger prints and give it a light polish (nothing too heavy as respray planned for later this year) and some temp touching in

and finally - enjoy it!

Hopefully first show outing will be the club stand at Stanford Hall

A quick update on Pink.

Well she's now got 500 trouble free miles under her belt, including a day out on the club stand at Stanford Hall. Been using it as my daily too and really does make me smile

Did some testing over first couple of days and replaced front wheel bearings (noisy but no play in them), new radiator fitted (was suspect but small leak started on the seam), overhauled carburettor (had the kit to do it but just hadn't got round to it).

It has NOT missed a beat so far, I'm well impressed. The only thing that didn't work was the gear change indicator light but this is now sorted thanks to a replacement unit from Ianaudia4 (Cheers Ian :beers: ) so I am pleased to report absolutely everything works (including the headlamp washers that surprised me the other night when washing the windscreen  )

It got a great reception at Stanford too and I get lots of comments on the Aubergine interior, very retro!

Anyway, a photo of both my 'Rocco's at Stanford

Glad to hear that the part I gave you works fine.
