B pillar/rear hatch plastic stuff!

Post by buggerrit »

Anyone any experience of/heard tales of how to remove
this horrible wrinkled sticky black plastic from the B pillars
and the rear hatch. Tried "picking" at it - result VERY sore
fingernails :dunno:
The stuff seems to be welded to the paint!
All contributions welcome!

You can use a hair dryer/heat gun but it'll take ages or just use a toffee wheel. Easy peasy.

imagine a 'sticky' wheel which you attach to a drill - bodyshops use them a lot and you should be able to source one via one of the specialists such as Frost Automotive.

Sorry, should have explained that.
As Sean said it's like a big, round rubbery disc that bolts onto your drill. Think I paid £8 for mine. ordered it through my local bodyshop

Toffee wheels FTW!

I used the toffee wheel that Jim kindly lent me to do the vinyl on my B-pillars.

First, get the necessary tools together:

Right. Good as they are, don't expect the toffee wheel to be a miracle cure. It's still bloody hard work and it still takes ages. Also, I cannot overstate how much dust the process creates. To say "it makes a bit of dust" is like saying "Katy Price likes a bit of publicity". And, as Jim reminded me, be gentle with it. It may just be a rubber disc, but it can (and will) take your paint off if you press too hard with it. Best technique - moderate speed on the drill (about half throttle on my Black & Decker) and "bounce" the wheel off the surface (gently).

Hard work, but worth it in the end.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I resorted to a glass scraper which
obviously removed waaaay more than the plastic :swoon:
No worries tho' - the car's in for a full repaint in the next few
days.

Anyone got any wacky ideas for a mat/satin finish?
Looking to knock the scabby rusty bits off, de-badge the tailgate,
side rubbing strips already gone as have roof seam rubbers.
Probably end up drab olive green unless you've got any better suggestions
