I need to fit bucket seats into my Golf, but these are in the way! Are these structural, or can I get the angle grinder out?

It'll definately help in the event of side on colision i'm thinking. Reason I say this is because I cant see anything else running across the car that would stop your floor pan folding up if hit from the side. Is that a cage I see? Door Bars will help if you are going to chop it out.

Best to ask on CGTI, loads of guys have bucket seats on there, and I havent seen them needing to cut this out before. What are the subframes for? or are they just universal bolt through the floor jobbies?

Yeah, they are the universal jobbies. I've got a iron bar that I was going to run across in replacement. I was thinking that coupled with the seat itself would be a sufficient replacement. Yes, there is also a roll-cage with door bars there. The problem is that I'm short :yup: The seat was originally set behind this cross-member, but with my legs I can't fully depress the clutch  And without having something fabricated to go over the beam my other option was to have it cut out :vcool:

Not in racing terms. Gentlemen of a vertically challenged nature like us have a "low centre of gravity"

I've met Lewis Hamilton and he's short too. Clearly the most talented drivers are shorter :pilot:

drive with platform shoes on?

don't just take the angle grinder to it. carefully drill out the spot welds round the outside of it. you will need to put something back to replace it though, as they will contribute to the strength of the shell. the seat itself isn't sufficient to stop you getting squished!

don't forget to put something to strengthen the shell where you bolt your new seats in

Nate makes an incredibly important point here. You can buy reinforcing plates with captive nuts for motorsport purposes that will do the trick, they stop the bolt pulling through the chassis and letting you fly around the inside of your car!

a 3" piece of 5mm plate on the underside like a giant washer will work too. that's all they do for towbars
