Scirocco Register

So. I might become a familiar name on this site. Todays problem:

Drove to get groceries with the intention of finding a quiet spot for the ms to get used to her scirocco which she still hasn't really driven much due to a number of things, won't go into that here. There was a LOT of rattling which was a new sound (only driven the car a couple of times so far though) which I thought was the loose spot lamp, but whilst looking at that, noticed oil on top of the filter case/housing? (sorry, not familiar with real names yet) and noticed a hose missing (see circled pic below), and oil (see arrow). The knackered sound proofing under the bonnet is soaked in oil too.

1. What is the hose (part number too would be ace)
2. Where might the oil be coming from
3. Is this missing hose something that can go AWOL, or could it have been removed by my mechanic when he did the gear selectors and not put back - just want to eliminate this, don't know where the heck the selector is. or if this pipe would get in the way!!

Oh yeah, it's a 1.8 GT Carb 1989 with rusty door and rear panel, unbalanced ill fitting wheels, snapped seat recliner cable, flexi hose filler that doesn't let you fill up quickly - but we still just about love her!

wheres the picture mate would help with the missing hose?
Oil on top of the oil filter housing could be that one of the sensors is loose. I wouldnt think it would cause to much banging, but depends on how much oil is/has
been lost, have you checked it ?
One thing i would check though is the sparks plugs make sure none are loose, check the 3rd spark plug toward the gear box end..

Haven't checked how much oil has been lost, but a quick look at the dipstick showed plenty still there (didn't have any rag/tissue to clean it).
The rattling seems to be from the whole filter case moving due to there being no hose. It did seem like a hollow plastic banging thinking about it.

I'll check the plugs as mentioned after work tomorrow, and clean it up with GUNK spray, then run it for a while. Where is the sensor you mentioned (need to get a Haynes).

The pipe that is missing is the air intake that sucks cool air from the front of the car, contact GSF and ask them, it won't be expensive.
The oli looks old and could be from a previous rocker cover leak, clean it and see if it reappears.
Where you based mate as there are plenty of people on here that would give you a hand to get it sorted?

The hose that is missing is to aid the Carbs auto-choke. It does nothing. Don't worry. Its supposed to help draw hot air from the exhaust manifold (hense why they are connected) to aid running in the winter. If the metal part is lose, its held on by 3 13mm bolts on the back of the exhaust manifold, have a root under there when the engine is cold and you will see what I mean

Ah, that's put my mind at rest about the hose, cheers! As for the oil, my pic doesn't show the fresh oil on top of the filter housing. Looks like it has somehow sprayed up into the bonnet foam and then dripped back onto the housing. In fact, the foam stuff was hanging off in places due to this perhaps.
I'll take a proper look tomorrow, and let you know of any progress.
Oh, and I'm in Stockport up North, already had many helpful replies from this website, great stuff... the mrs might just get to drive her 'rocco soon!

Don't worry about the under-bonnet foam, hardly any of us have that in mint condition, its a badge of honour if you do round these parts!

To be honest, I wouldn't worry about the oil leak. As long as you ain't running out at alarming rate I'd leave it and put it down to the joys of owning a retro car. These old girls are tough dude!

Ha, yeah, the foam is coming straight off tonight... can't see it reducing noise levels, not with the tappety tap tap rattles from the beast within!
I will at least try to sort the oil leak though with my lack of knowledge and eagerness! 8 hours of boredom at work first though.

jsut watch takign the foam off, on some cars it starts to over heat the paint on top of the bonnet so I've heard.



there are replacments, forget where and how... but there are replacments!

Thats a generous offer Jay! Can you not see the pics above (I know some work networks block stuff) ? They don't show where the oil might be coming from, but I intent to look tonight and might have fresh images or a solution if I'm lucky.

If anyone knows the part number, or even official name of the hose/pipe that is missing, I will go to GSF. Or, will they know what it is if I show them the pic? Only ever bought basic parts before.

Might look into new foam too, doesn't have to be original but the paint is still good and I wouldn't want to spoil it. Thanks for the advice!!

the pipe is bog standard, GSF will know straight away, say the hot hair pipe or somethign similar


the foam is expensive, be warned .... some (Birdy) run a 2L 16V with no foam with no probs, but other (matt.. forget his register name) runs a std GT2 and had the paint bubbling... so putin some foam... well, it was more like carpet from what a saw, that thick, heavy duty stuff... looked great.. MATT WHERE/WHO ARE YOU, AND WHERE DO I FIND THAT STUFF YOU PUT UNDER YOUR BONNET!?!?!?!?!?

Had a quick look myself, seen some weird stuff on eBay that wasn't foam, looked a bit odd. Also, there is Dynamat stuff that also isn't cheap and mainly for interior though it did say 'hood', and probably focusses more on sound proofing. Wondered what effect the silver backed stuff people use has on engine temps, saw questions on another forum but didn't read it all.

I'll put that to the back of my list anyway, as the car isn't being used just yet !

The foam underbonnet can be bought from VW Classic parts, it is about £75. PeteGLi bought some recently.

As for the oil leak, I removed the Filter Housing/Carb Cover doo dah, and spotted exactly where the fault is (assuming it is in just one place!). The pic below shows a close-up of a 'T piece', where one of the small pipes has worn away and does not hold tight anymore. It is the one coming from the plastic bit at the top of the photo. It is one of two connections and has 'B' on it.

What the heck is it please! I am wondering if I can get away with trimming 1cm off the end of this, or do I need a new length of pipe? Can the pipe be pulled off from the 'good' end without damaging anything, and where is the best place to pick some up?

Going to VW for a few parts tomorrow, can anyone tell me what the heat-wrapped pipe is made of, usual rubber hose, or metal, plastic?? Wondering is 48mm coolant hose or the corrugated air hose would do it. The loose end attaches to the manifold as mentioned above.
