timing

guy's, I need some help/suggestions regarding timing issues with my '81 1.6 gls scirocco, I changed the timing belt, lined up the dot's tdc mark on the pulley. intermediate shaft, camshaft dot all spot on, fires up ok ticks over ok, but dies after running for about five min's, wierd thing is when I put the strobe on it the pulley notch is sitting about 25mm away from tdc,
if I move the dizzy to line up the marks it get's rough and cut's out, I've checked all the electric's, fitted a new switch unit to no avail. had the belt off several times to make sure everything is lined up, moved the intermediate shaft a notch either way,no difference, I'm stumped, it ran fine until I changed the belt, obviously i've done something but what I don't know , I've owned several MK 1 golf gti's in the past, changed timing belts on them before, no problems, any suggestions before I go nuts!
