New member, new scirocco!

Hi everybody!

I've been lurking for a while, I've just bought an '87 white GTX from my father in law, it has full vw service history up until 2004 it's only done 5000 miles over the last 6 years and is up to 95k now. It was driven regularly, just not very far!!!

So what should I get done, I'm guessing a full service and cam belt/water pump change is needed, it didn't skip a beat on the 200 mile drive home so I'm hoping it's okay, but what do you guys recommend I get looked at first?

There's a few cosmetic bits I need (I've posted in the wanted section) and there's a few rust scabs but it sailed through a pre-mot check only a few weeks ago only needing a bit of suspension work, the mechanic remarked on how good it was..

Any thoughts?

Have a read of the FAQ, found here:
http://sciroccoregisterforum.co.uk/faq/

As well as a good service and cambelt change, take a look at the fuel filler neck and make sure it's not rusty. Any signs of bubbling/crustiness on the outside mean it's probably gone through, and bits of rust will be making their way into your fuel tank. If that's the case, get it changed ASAP.

The seal around the boot lock will probably be past its best if it's never been changed. Easy and cheap to replace (part still available from the dealer) and one of the (many) ways water will get inside your car.

Other than that, it's probably just a matter of identifying problems as you find them.

Check out the area where the clutch cable goes through the bulkhead. Tends to weaken and pull through, not good when you are 50 miles from home as was my case. Another common problem.

Greetings dude :)

Forget all the mechanical shizzle... just make sure it's charging the battery well enough for you to have tunes for when AA / RAC etc delays in getting to you.... nah, kidding. All of the above. And yeah, piccies tell a thousand tales!!

Rubber and trim invariably you will not get new, so take care of them, although obviously trim can be purloined off donor scrapped vehicles.

Greetings, hope you enjoy the car.

What's this recent obsession with water pumps being changed with cambelts?

No idea actually.. I'm mechanically challenged. Just thought it was the done thing. Is it pointless?

On alot of new cars the water pump runs off the cam belt and is hiding behind covers etc , so they recommend changing that as well as everything is off the car.

On the Scirocco the water pump runs of the fan belt and is at the front of the engine, its really easy to change of a later date. If you are not having problems with the water pump dont bother changing it as it can be a nightmare sealing the water pump to the engine.
