Replacement Sump

Hello gents,
I think i may have a crack in my sump. Is it easy enough to get off? Cheap parts? The plug and gasket would be replaced anyway.
I seen a few threads weld up the hole/crack and is that a good idea?
Cheers
Kieran

Most of the 1.8/1.6 engines are the same, 1.8 GTI on the Mk2 Golfs def is, looking at paying around £50 for a new one and £10 for a gasket.

if its more of a split than a gaping hole just weld it up - I split mine on a speedbump around xmas time, dropped the sump off the car with 20 or so 10mm bolts which you can see running all the way round if you lie down and have a look. I wiped off the excess oil, welded it and stuck it back on with a new gasket and some 15/40. didn't touch the plug or washer.. before deciding to get it welded I priced up a sump and gasket from GSF for like 41 or 42 quid. Id be careful with these ebay sumps as they are nowhere near as thick as genuine ones. Not a good idea if your running low
